This cake is legendary in my family. It’s probably the most-requested birthday cake that my mom has made through the years. My mom has an arsenal of cake recipies that stir up fond memories, a burst of sentimentality and a desire to head to the kitchen and break out the flour: devil’s food cake (my favorite), blueberry buckle, gingerbread with lemon curd, a chocolate chip sheet cake with a crinkly cinnamon and sugar top, busy day cake, and of course the spiceless spice cake.

Have you ever told a white lie? You are going to love this, especially all of the ladies who bake for church events: Alice Grayson was to bake a cake for the Baptist Church Ladies' Group in Tuscaloosa , but forgot to do it until the last minute.. She remembered it the morning of the bake sale and after rummaging through cabinets, found an angel food cake mix & quickly made it while drying her hair, dressing, and helping her son pack up for Scout camp.

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12th, caused not only a tremendous loss of life, but considerable damage to the nation’s infrastructure. As people around the world watch the heart-wrenching images coming out of the earthquake ravaged nation, donations are pouring in.
But getting aid into Haiti has been a slow-going process, especially when the lines of communication are interrupted.

If you're cramming in last minute Christmas shopping, you might just be headed to the mall for a marathon day of shopping.
A long shopping day means you're going to need to refuel. With all the wonderful treats around you don't want to waste precious calories on run-of-the-mill food court fare.

I have cookies on the brain. My Google reader is full of recipies for cookies, Family Circle and Everyday Food have cookies on their covers, I saved the Boston Globe magazine last Sunday because they had a bunch of cookie recipes from local bakeries. So really, it's no wonder that when I sat down to decide what my next baking adventure would be, I fell immediately upon cookies.

A couple Thanksgivings ago, I celebrated with my neighbor's family and their two fantastic kids in Tahoe. The turkey was in the oven and I realized we didn't have a centerpiece for the table. I had found two empty large fish bowls/vases in the house.

Making Ends Meet in the Great Depression
By JOYCE WADLER (New York Times)
Published: April 1, 2009
AT a time when life in America is beginning to resemble a roller-coaster ride on the way down and everyone is trying to find ways to save money, it may be instructive — both in terms of offering helpful hints and putting things in perspective — to look at how people ran their households during the Great Depression.
Memories from the Great Depression seem more relevant today than ever. The New York Times is starting a series of video conversations about that painful past and the uncertain future.

About Slow Cooking
Slow cooking is a cooking method that uses an electrical countertop appliance referred to as a slow cooker. Slow cookers are often referred to as Crock-Pots®, which is actually a brand name for a type of slow cooker.

Redbook madras chickenYesterday, I spent 1 1/2 hours in a prep kitchen preparing my family meals. I prepared six servings of the following dishes and this will feed my family until the first week in October! Using the prep kitchen and freezing my meals makes it easier for me to work my crazy hours and still come home and cook (which I love to do).
