WASHINGTON — A coalition of mega-bands and singers outraged that music — including theirs — was cranked up to help break uncooperative detainees at Guantanamo Bay is joining retired military officers and liberal activists to rally support for President Barack Obama's push to shutter the Navy-run prison for terrorist suspects in Cuba.
Pearl Jam, R.E.M., and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails are among the musicians who have joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo, which launched Tuesday.
On behalf of the campaign, the National Security Archive in Washington is filing a Freedom of Information Act request seeking classified records that detail the use of loud music as an interrogation device.

The plastics industry is spending more than $1 million to fight a surcharge on grocery bags in Seattle.
In an effort to reduce plastic and paper waste, the city council imposed the 20-cent-per-bag charge last year; but the American Chemistry Council(ACC) helped fund a petition drive that forced the issue to a city-wide ballot.

Throwing orange peels, coffee grounds and grease-stained pizza boxes in the trash will be against the law in San Francisco, and could even lead to a fine.
The Board of Supervisors voted 9-2 Tuesday to approve Mayor Gavin Newsom's proposal for the most comprehensive mandatory composting and recycling law in the country. It's an aggressive push to cut greenhouse gas emissions and have the city sending nothing to landfills or incinerators by 2020.

A City Committed to Recycling Is Ready for More
By FELICITY BARRINGER
Published: May 7, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO — Mayor Gavin Newsom is competitive about many things, garbage included. When the city found out a few weeks ago that it was keeping 70 percent of its disposable waste out of local landfills, he embraced the statistic the way other mayors embrace winning sports teams, improved test scores or declining crime rates.
The San Francisco Recycling Center processes about 750 tons of recyclables a day, and Mayor Gavin Newsom wants to add to that total.

Clean & Green
Here's a collection of my favorite natural cleaning formulas, concoctions
and witches brews. MOST are safe and nontoxic, with a few exceptions which are clearly noted.
Use the ingredients listed below when making your own alternative cleaners, most are
inexpensive and you probably already have many of them in your kitchen cupboards.

OMG, pirates! Headlines around the country squealed with glee as our Navy SEALS - the Easter SEALS - took out the Somalian baddies, freed the newest American hero and helped President Obama with the "dodging of a PR bullet," as USA Today put it.
