Five years after suicidal zealots crashed planes into our comfortable lives, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld scolded us: "Any kind of moral and intellectual confusion about who and what is right or wrong can severely weaken the ability of free societies to persevere."
Leave aside Rumsfeld's arrogant and patronizing attitude, showing evident contempt for anyone who didn't agree with his notions of right and wrong. Were we, are we, morally and intellectually confused?

Scientists said yesterday that they had transplanted a microbe's entire, tangled mass of DNA into a closely related organism, a delicate operation that cleanly transformed the recipient from one species into the other.
After the operations, the "patients" -- single-celled organisms resembling bacteria -- dutifully obeyed their new genomes and by every measure exhibited the biological personas of the donors.
"This is equivalent to changing a Macintosh computer into a PC by inserting a new piece of [PC] software," said study leader J.

The human race will one day split into two separate species, an attractive, intelligent ruling elite and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures, according to a top scientist.
100,000 years into the future, sexual selection could mean that two distinct breeds of human will have developed.
The alarming prediction comes from evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry from the London School of Economics, who says that the human race will have reached its physical peak by the year 3000.

"Tell the FDA: Don't Put Human Genes in Goats for Drug Development

A widely used spermicide may increase a woman's risk of contracting human papillomavirus from a sex partner, a study in mice suggests. On the other hand, a thickening agent in many vaginal lubricants sold commercially impedes the virus' ability to infect female mice via their genital tracts—even in the presence of the spermicide.
It remains to be seen whether the findings will translate to people, cautions study coauthor Jeffrey N.

We have been buying organic milk at our house for a few years now. I got so used to buying it that I stopped paying attention to how much it costs. Today, however, I was at Target and needed to get some milk for my son.

A genetically modified mouse selects a bluish-green light panel over two orange panels and gets a soy milk reward, during an experiment to determine whether the mouse could distinguish between the colors.
Scientists have some lab mice seeing red. The animals had their vision genetically upgraded and can now see colors normally invisible to rodents.
