Pregnant Giada De Laurentiis Discovers New Cravings

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis has a new menu to plan: her own.

The mother-to-be, who is due to deliver a baby girl on April 3, has felt new cravings since becoming pregnant. "I always want steak – lots of steak," she told PEOPLE at DeVito's South Beach restaurant in Miami on Saturday night during the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

"I used to crave sweets before I got pregnant. You know, chocolate, cookies, cake. I've normally got a really big sweet tooth, but not now this baby just wants meat," she said.

With her feet propped up on the lap of husband Todd Thompson, De Laurentiis, 37, also chatted with restaurant owner Danny DeVito and sister celebrity chef Rachael Ray.

"You know, I think this is the time to indulge myself," De Laurentiis said. "It's such a wonderful time, so I'm eating what I want."

Although she has stopped exercising until the baby is born, De Laurentiis says she is determined not to gain too much weight. "I eat a lot of little meals, which is what you're supposed to do when you're pregnant," she says. "It's healthier, anyway."

She also says that her changing body is a small price to pay for the new baby. "I couldn't be more excited about being pregnant," she says. "She can't get here soon enough. I can't wait to meet her."

Giada De Laurentiis Welcomes a Baby Girl

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis is the new mother of a baby girl, PEOPLE has confirmed.

"De Laurentiis and husband Todd Thompson welcomed their first child, a healthy baby girl, on Saturday March 29 in Los Angeles," her rep tells PEOPLE. "Jade Marie De Laurentiis Thompson weighed in at 5lbs, 13oz."

The baby is the first for the Food Network star and Today show contributor, 37, and her husband since 2003, Todd Thompson, 44, a clothing designer.

"When I found out I was pregnant I was in complete shock," De Laurentiis said last November, when the baby news was first announced. "I truly didn't believe it. I honestly thought, 'There has got to be a mistake.' "

By February, she was saying of the physical changes overtaking her – and her sudden cravings for steak – "I couldn't be more excited about being pregnant. ... I can't wait to meet her."

Giada De Laurentiis Shares Baby's First Smile

Celebrity chef and new mom Giada De Laurentiis is learning all about the joys of motherhood.

"She smiled for first time yesterday!" she gushed to PEOPLE Sunday at The Second Annual Kidstock Music and Arts Festival in Beverly Hills. "It sounds so corny – and I remember my friends telling me and me being like, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah,' but it's so special. Especially when you're sleep deprived and all you do is change poopy diapers, it's so great to get something in return."

So special, in fact, she warned her husband Todd Thompson, 44, not to take his eyes off their daughter, Jade Marie De Laurentiis Thompson, who was born on March 29. "I was telling my husband before I left, you have to make sure to watch her all day, because she will give you the biggest smile when you least expect it."

The Food Network star and Today show contributor also revealed that the family's latest addition is already inspiring her to try her hand at making gourmet baby food.

"People have been asking me for years to come up with kids' recipes and doing all that because I have a lot of kids that watch the show. And I'm thinking, 'I'm not a mom, not my thing, leave that to the moms.' And now, I'm so into it!"

But the one person who may not be as into it? Her husband: "[He's] like, 'No more puréed food, thank you very much!'" explained De Laurentiis. "Because I try all the recipes out on him first, so then we'll see if Jade likes them."

Regardless, her next cookbook, due out in September, includes a baby/toddler section.

Creamy Artichoke Soup

Creamy Artichoke Soup
From Giada De Laurentiis

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 leeks, white part only, washed well and chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 small potato, peeled and chopped
1 (8-ounce) package frozen artichoke hearts, thawed
2 cups chicken stock
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons plus 1/3 cup mascarpone cheese
2 tablespoons chopped chives, for garnish

Heat olive oil in a heavy, large pot over medium heat.
Add the leeks and the garlic and stir. Add the potatoes and cook for 5 minutes, stirring often.
Add the artichokes, stock, salt, and pepper and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes.
Using a handheld immersion blender, or in a blender in batches*, puree the soup. Add the 2 tablespoons mascarpone and blend again to combine.
In a small bowl, stir the remaining 1/3 cup mascarpone to soften.
Ladle the soup into serving bowls. Dollop the top of each of the soups with a spoonful of the softened mascarpone cheese and top the cheese with chives.

Serves 4.

*When blending hot liquids: Remove liquid from the heat and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes. Transfer liquid to a blender or food processor and fill it no more than halfway. If using a blender, release one corner of the lid. This prevents the vacuum effect that creates heat explosions. Place a towel over the top of the machine, pulse a few times then process on high speed until smooth.

Salmon with Puff Pastry and Pesto

So easy to make! It's a great hit too!

Recipe Summary
Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Yield: 4 servings

You'll need:
4 pieces of purchased puff pastry, each cut to be just larger than a piece of salmon
4 (4 to 6-ounce) pieces salmon
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1/4 cup purchased pesto
2 tomatoes, sliced

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
On a foil-lined baking sheet, place the 4 pieces of puff pastry. Also place the 4 pieces of salmon, being careful to make sure they are not touching. Sprinkle each piece of salmon with 1 tablespoon of the sliced almonds. Bake for 10 minutes.

To serve, place each piece of puff pastry on a plate. Top each puff pastry with 1 tablespoon of pesto. Top the pesto with 2 slices of tomatoes each. Top the tomatoes with the salmon and serve.

Last night for Vday my fiancee and I went to Lure Fishbar in Soho. Absolutely one of my fav seafood restaurants, the meal was going so well, and around 8:15 Giada, her husband (who is the designer for Anthropologie), and another couple get seated 2 booths down. We were SO excited, but no one else seemed to notice! The manager was very attentive, and the chef came out of the kitchen to meet her-- it was very cute, he walked away with an extra bounce in his step (like, Giada chose me for Vday! Me!). We didn't harass her since she looked very happy and relaxed (and it's Vday), but just seeing her definitely made my night that much better! She's just as pretty in person as she is on TV!

What Do They Do With the Food on Food Network?

Next spring's Iron Man 2 premiere will be memorable not only for the stars of the film, but also for two lucky fans – thanks to castmember and Oxfam Ambassador Scarlett Johansson. Johansson is auctioning off for charity two movie premiere tickets, as well as a meet-and-greet with the Golden Globe nominee herself.
The auction begins Thursday at 10 p.m. ET at eBay.com/Oxfam and will run through Sept. 24, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Oxfam America, an organization long dedicated to finding lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice around the world.
"I'm so thrilled to be a part of this eBay charity opportunity, again raising funds for Oxfam," Johansson, 24, says in a statement. "Oxfam is an incredibly worthy organization that I'm most passionate about."
The winning bidder and his or her guest will attend the Los Angeles premiere and receive a complimentary session at the Cristophe Salon in Beverly Hills to prepare for the red carpet.
