Girls rule! The best 3-year-old in the land just happens to be a filly named Rachel Alexandra.
Jockey Calvin Borel all but guaranteed victory in the Preakness Stakes and, boy, did she deliver, becoming the first filly in 85 years to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.

As professional as ever, undefeated Zenyatta equaled the legendary Personal Ensign's 13-race winning streak to begin her career, sweeping past the pacesetters in upper stretch to capture Oak Tree's $300,000 Lady's Secret Stakes (gr. I) before 20,329 at Santa Anita in characteristic fashion Oct. 10.

Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird followed in the footsteps of his sire Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course as he splashed his way to an imposing 3½ length victory over longshot Hold Me Back in the 140th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Shadwell Travers Stakes.
The son of 2004 Belmont-Travers winner Birdstone, ridden by Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux, took the lead with a quarter-mile to go and was never threatened as he edged clear through the stretch to add the “Mid-Summer Derby” to his victory over Dunkirk and Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the Belmont Stakes.
Summer Bird’s winning time for the 1¼ miles was 2:02.83 over a sloppy track.

Chocolate cake, nutella frosting. My original plan was just to do a circle of red roses like those ones they put on the horses, but then Cody {my boyfriend} found the little plastic horses at the cake store. After Eight Belles died, I knocked one of the little horses over.

The other Bird has done it again, this time in the Travers Stakes.
Summer Bird splashed his way to a 3 1/2-length victory over long shot Hold Me Back on Saturday and added thoroughbred racing's Midsummer Derby to his Belmont Stakes victory over Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird two months ago.
After the Belmont, Summer Bird finished second to superstar filly Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug.

Tomorrow is the 140th running of the Travers Stakes at Saratoga. The Travers Stakes is one of the oldest horseracing events - the first race was in 1864 and the field is limited to three-year-olds.
One of the most notable moments in Travers history is in 1962 when Jaipur beat Ridan by a nose bob and was considered a bit of an upset.
