The cost of maintaining a home and appliances is often a major deterrent for those debating whether to rent or purchase a home. The unexpected expense of fixing leaky gutters and broken dishwashers can be budget breaking if it comes at the wrong time of month. Not to mention it's a huge pain.

So, I'm sure there's some super-specialized place on the internet that could answer this question for me, but what I want to know is how many of you ladies have a rice cooker, and what else do you do with it?
I just finally got one tonight and made some fantastic, perfectly cooked brown rice. I've been wanting one forever, because I'm so easily distracted I always wander away from the stove and accidentally let my rice burn. (Or I put in too much water.) I know, set a timer, I'm just ADD in the kitchen, I hear the timer, taste the rice, and wander away again, thinking to myself, "I'll go check on it in a minute...". And it seems like every time it takes a different amount of time to get to the right consistency, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, 35 minutes... Easier to pony up the thirty bucks for the appliance than to try and change my behavior to become patient enough to deal, you know? Plus, honestly, the first batch of rice we made was so tasty, it's better than anything we've made on the stove, I don't know why.

Hi,
We're purchasing our first home (we've put an offer on the bank-approved-full-price and been accepted by the seller but since it's a short sale, we're waiting for the bank to respond).
I know this is way too early, but I would LOVE inputs, suggestions on how to 'reno' or 'refresh' the kitchen and bathroom. We're going to be purchasing all new appliances (they don't come with any working ones), painting, putting new carpet on the floor (since their hardwood is in a real sorry state), mowing the lawn and 'cleaning up' the whole exterior that has looked like a fire-hazard jungle, etc.

And here's what our kitchen looks like now!!
The total cost of my redo was about $20. I spent ~$10 on a 5 gallon bucket of joint compound, and then bought two gallon cans of "oops" paint for $5 each at Home Depot.

I'm in a bit of an uncomfortable situation with a friend of mine and I really need some "What would you do?" advice. I'm really going to try to keep this as short as possible but it's a bit of a complex situation so that's nearly impossible.

Clean & Green
Here's a collection of my favorite natural cleaning formulas, concoctions
and witches brews. MOST are safe and nontoxic, with a few exceptions which are clearly noted.
Use the ingredients listed below when making your own alternative cleaners, most are
inexpensive and you probably already have many of them in your kitchen cupboards.

So, we know how to do simple things in the kitchen in order to make it more green from this post , but what about energy saving in the kitchen generally? Here are some great tips and information on specific areas of the kitchen:
Dishwashing
~ If washing dishes by hand, fill one basin with warm soapy water and the other with cold rinse water. This saves much more water than leaving the cold water running for rinsing.

We've worked for about 5 months on our loft remodel. We started with a big empty cement box, and we are in the process of transforming it into exactly what we want. We started with a blank canvas, and designed it all ourselves.
