POOR old De Beers is being harassed on all sides.
Though the diamond giant claims everything is tickety-boo with resurgent sales, chairman Julian Ogilvie Thompson warns of 'the likely increases in the flow of rough diamonds from Angola and the US stockpile, and uncertainty over possible leakages of Russian goods'.
All very ominous but cynics are also remarking on the coincidence that the £150 million recently raised on the capital markets equates neatly with the cost of the current final dividend payout.

Big campaign donors typically come with deep pockets and influence. But in Illinois this election cycle, no one not running for office himself has given more to the nation's federal campaigns than Shi Sheng Hao of Roselle, a virtual unknown in business and political circles.
Before September 2007, Hao's name had never appeared in the 15-year-old federal database of campaign contributors.

------------------- Mouse 1, Viper 0 --------------------
TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan firefighters caring for a foot-
long viper tossed a tiny mouse in the cage as a snack but
then watched as the mouse turned mighty and killed the
snake. The furry little rodent skirted in and out of range
of the snake's gaping jaws and long fangs, darted in for
a bite, then skittered away, constantly on the attack. At
the end of a fierce 30-minute battle at the Nanoun fire
station, the snake was dead and the mouse had "barely a
scratch on him," one fireman told The Daily Telegraph.

On this day in 1931, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicates New York City's Empire State Building, pressing a button from the White House that turns on the building's lights. Hoover's gesture, of course, was symbolic; while the president remained in Washington, D.C., someone else flicked the switches in New York.
The idea for the Empire State Building is said to have been born of a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors, to see who could erect the taller building.
