Women competing for Argentina's Miss Pole Dance Sudamerica 2009 performed in downtown Buenos Aires yesterday. Pole dancing competitions have taken off in the US too, and some of you previously took issue with the fact that a highly sexualized activity is now a competitive sport. Still, you have to admit that these women are showing off some serious skill.

Update: During his emotional press conference, Gov. Sanford admitted to having an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina.
I've heard of guys up and disappearing before, but the story of South Carolina governor Mark Sanford's disappearance takes it to a whole new level.

- South Carolina's Gov. Mark Sanford, who has been missing since last Thursday, has returned from Argentina. While his wife said she had no idea where he was, his staff said he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail, which appears to have been false.

Her story "is completely false. They were at the hotel playing cards with the former and current presidents." They were playing "Oh, Hell."

Argentina's Banco Provincia wants you to know it treats all people the same. In this forward thinking ad the bank's acceptance of a transgender woman prompts an old man (who also uses the bank) to accept her, too. The final message that splashes across the screen translates as: "Your life changes when there's a bank disposed to change."

Lucas Risé, an Argentinean artist who spent most of his childhood painting street signs in Buenos Aires, now makes a living by creating wonderfully colored cabinets inspired by carnival, circus, and park imagery. His experiences on trips to Europe, the U.S., South Africa, and Brazil have influenced the style of these cabinets, known as Sans Parapluie ("without an umbrella"), the edges and borders of which he says, "disappear to become an open space where different cultures come together and which reflection is life itself." The names of the cabinets (painted with enamel on wood) are as whimsical as the bright and busy designs themselves, such as "Carousel," "Circus," "African Breeze," "Violin," and "Flower Park."

Empanada, pronounced m-pah-nah-dah
A small, single serving, half moon shaped pastry with savory filling (although sometimes sweet - have you tried the new Starbucks mango and pineapple one?). The filling can be seasoned many ways and can contain meat, seafood, and vegetables. Empanadas are typically in Spain and South America, especially Argentina where they are consumed in quantities similar to that of sandwiches in the United States.

Chimichurri
A thick herb sauce that consists of olive oil, vinegar and finely chopped parsley, oregano, onion and garlic, all seasoned with salt, cayenne, and black pepper. It's most commonly used as a salsa or marinade with grilled meat. Chimichurri comes from Argentina where it parallels ketchup in America as being a widely popular condiment.
