Fast & Easy Dinner: Turkey and Black-Bean Soup

Taste Test: Baconnaise

Bacon has surpassed cupcakes as the food of the moment: In the past year, we've seen it appear in everything from chocolate to vodka to pork-flavored floss.

Its latest incarnation? Baconnaise, made by J&D's, the brand best known for its Bacon Salt. Since I love both mayo and bacon, as soon as I heard about it, I decided I needed to have it.

On its own, the spread had an incredibly creamy, smoky flavor. When used in place of mayonnaise in my lunchtime BLT, it enhanced the bacon that I couldn't get enough of. I even found myself dipping my potato chips in Baconnaise (a bit too salty, but still delicious), and wondering whether or not it would be kosher to just dip the entire corner of my sandwich into the jar. (For the record, Baconnaise itself is certified kosher.)

The best aspect of Baconnaise is the fact that even people who don't like mayonnaise might love it. Aside from its creamy texture, it really bears no resemblance to mayonnaise. And Baconnaise only includes milk and eggs, which means that for once, vegetarians can take part in bacon, if they so choose.

It's my new favorite thing. I mean, why eat regular mayonnaise ever again, when one can enjoy the savory roundedness of Baconnaise? For those of you who have tried it, did you like it as much as I did?

I love Ike's Place so much that I could start a 'Wich of the Week spinoff devoted solely to sandwiches from Ike's. I was hesitant to write about my new favorite sandwich place in San Francisco, since the lines are long enough already. But keeping the enormous, palate-entertaining creations to myself wouldn't be in the spirit of sandwich love.

Opened a year ago, Ike's is a tiny storefront in the Castro neighborhood, barely big enough to accommodate its sizable staff — making sandwiches this well is no easy task — and massive menu of 50-plus sandwiches with playful names like Nacho Boy (hot roast beef, mushrooms, avocado, and swiss) and the Paul Reubens (a take on the Reuben with poppy-seed coleslaw). Priced between $7 and $9, these are some of the largest sandwiches I've ever eaten; if I have one for lunch, I'm hardly hungry for dinner. But that's not even a taste of why I like Ike's. 'Wich of the Week: Old-School Club

Club sandwiches are so ubiquitous that I usually take them for granted. I order them very occasionally, maybe from hotel room service or when I'm looking for a "healthy" option at a diner. But every time I eat a good one — when the bread is only lightly browned and there's just enough mayo to balance out the crispy bacon — I realize that the club sandwich deserves more credit.

The club is actually one of the oldest original American sandwiches, invented sometime around the 1890s. Originally, club sandwiches were single decker and usually made with chicken instead of turkey. There's no doubt about it, I really dig on bacon. I also really enjoy chocolate. Recently I had the opportunity to try Vosges Mo's Bacon Bar, which is a deep milk chocolate bar with tiny crumbles of applewood smoked bacon and Alder wood smoked salt. As a bar, it was interesting, I wasn't sure I needed to have it again — believe it or not, bacon is not my favorite flavor, it's up there, but it's not my favorite — but I definitely thought it was intriguing and worth trying. The folks that got to taste it were split in half, some thought it was "just wrong," while others thought it was heavenly.

Not happy with just a chocolate-bacon bar, the folks at Vosges have recently released the Flying Chocolate Pig ($12). The pig-shaped chocolate confection — which was originally created for their friend's wedding — is filled with applewood smoked bacon, Alder wood smoked salt and lots of deep milk chocolate. I love making a classic sandwich — in this case, the BLT — more exciting. I almost always add avocado to my BLTs and I jazz up the mayonnaise with herbs or spices. For this kicked up BLT, the mayo is mixed with garlic, fresh lime juice, and chili powder. I think it's safe to say that most people would not turn down a creamy slice of sweet cheesecake. However, the more out of the ordinary savory cheesecake is a much harder sell. Whenever I find myself drunk and hungry in San Francisco's Mission District, I hurry over to the stand selling hot dogs wrapped in bacon. According to my sister, this delicious hot dog — topped with caramelized onions, mustard, and ketchup with a grilled jalapeño on the side — is a specialty of Mexico. The other day, when I asked my sister what kind of soup she wanted for dinner, she quickly replied lentil. I researched some recipes and started chopping vegetables. Later when we sat down to dinner I realized she was only kidding! Luckily the soup was hearty and delicious and my entire family enjoyed it. The original recipe has you puree the soup, but I left it chunky for texture. The croutons add a nice crunch, but don't directly affect the flavor of the soup.
