Recently, PartySugar tried to dispel the belief that Oktoberfest begins in October — it actually started last weekend! But if you haven't gotten in on the festivities just yet, don't worry; there's still time to celebrate, as the Autumn festival doesn't end until the weekend after next, on Oct. 4.

Contrary to popular belief, Oktoberfest, the annual German beer festival, doesn't begin in October, it actually starts this weekend! Just because I can't travel to this year's event doesn't mean I shouldn't celebrate in the comforts of my own home. You can, too, by following my plan for the ultimate Oktoberfest.

Bratwurst is a type of uncured, fresh sausage made typically from pork, and less commonly with beef and veal. It originated in Germany, and remains popular there and in areas of the American Midwest. While no standard recipe exists for brats, as they're affectionately called, the sausages are heavily spiced, and may include the likes of cardamom, celery seeds, caraway, and coriander.

While YumSugar is a fan of German potato salad, I'm crazy about another German dish. Do you know the name of this decadent dessert?

It's National Riesling week and while you could enjoy a discount on European Riesling at a number of restaurants in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, and Las Vegas, you can just as easily celebrate by sipping a bottle in the comforts of your own home. I highly recommend my current Riesling of choice, the 2007 Schloss Schönborn Estate Riesling. It's a juicy, drinkable white with a slight sweetness.

A couple of days ago I suggested you make a vegetarian variation of a German classic, schnitzel, for dinner. Below is another typical German dish — do you know what it's called?

In German, schnitzel is the word for "cutlet" and the culinary technique usually refers to an ingredient that has been breaded. In this vegetarian variation, thick eggplant slices and meaty portobello mushrooms are dipped in egg and breadcrumbs. Instead of the usual fatty pan-frying, the veggies are baked until brown and crisp in the oven.

This past week marked the beginning of Oktoberfest, the Autumn celebration that started in Munich, Germany, almost 200 years ago. It has since spawned festivals everywhere in the world, from Cincinnati to Brazil. Aside from the beer and German delicacies, the event also includes cultural entertainment and attractions.

Although cheesecakes squares or macaroons are delightful options, my birthday party won't be complete without a birthday cake. Chocolate cake is my favorite and this interesting twist on the classic German chocolate cake is unexpected and scrumptious.
Since my party is at a bar, 15 Romolo, I'll show up early enough for the bartenders to securely store the cake in a refrigerator.
