I'll be up front and say that Valentine's Day is not my favorite holiday. I'm an idealist who believes that every day should be full of love and affection. But I do appreciate that it's the perfect excuse to eat a surplus of chocolate, and better yet, just about the only occasion when it's acceptable to drink ridiculously girly cocktails.

Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend one of my favorite events of the year: the Zinfandel Advocate and Producers (or ZAP) annual festival. On Thursday night I participated in a walk-around food and wine tasting. A bunch of wineries pair up with local restaurants and caterers who create a small dish to pair with the wine.

Before you sit down to a romantic dinner for two on Valentine's Day, enjoy each other's company over a blushing cocktail. This drink is the perfect boy meets girl concoction.
Don't be fooled by the pink color; it's gin-based, so it's not for the faint of heart.

Over the weekend, I jumped in a car with some friends and hightailed it to Napa Valley, where we enjoyed brunch at Thomas Keller's casual family restaurant, ad hoc. Visiting Napa wineries isn't unlike barhopping; the experience depends more on the tasting room staff and the crowd than it does the actual wine.

On Wednesday FabSugar and I hosted our Apples to Apples game night. The party was a total success, and we had a great time thanks in part to a conversation-stimulating cocktail. Although I had planned to make a vodka-based drink, Fab asked me to do something with whiskey, so in the end, I went with these apple spritzers.

If you're looking to expand your wine horizons, you might want to consider a light dessert wine called Muscat. A white grape varietal that's grown all over the world in wine-making regions from South Africa to Serbia, the Muscat grape is known for its highly perfumed floral aroma. Typically speaking, Muscats are fortified wines with moderate sweetness and a slight effervescence.

After years of living in San Francisco, I've made peace with the constant, bone-chilling wet weather. But there are still days — like this overcast Monday morning — when I can't seem to get warm, even after several cups of hot coffee. That's when I pine for a hot toddy, the only cold-weather warmer that can shake off chills this fierce.

When the weather is frightfully cold, there's nothing quite like a potent and flavorful cocktail to warm the soul. Here, Jason Schiffer, the owner of 320 Main in Seal Beach, shows us how to make the Maple Manhattan, a combination of whiskey, maple syrup, and punt e mes.
