Not to be confused with the chile pepper of the same name, ají (pronounced "ah-hee") is a vibrant sauce used as a condiment and for dipping all across South America. Although it often contains tomatoes, cilantro, hot peppers, and onions, the sauce varies in heat and content depending on the locale. In Chile, ají often has lemon; in Ecuador, it's mild, with less heat; the Peruvian version typically has a verdant green color.

"Off-centered stuff for off-centered people" is the slogan used on every beer at Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, a Milton, DE-based craft brewery. Although the company is perhaps best known for its 60-Minute India Pale Ale, it's made headlines recently for being one of the few to produce chicha, a traditional Peruvian beer made out of corn that's been milled and moistened — in the brewer's mouth.
"Ancient brewers through trial and error learned that the natural enzymes in saliva would convert the starch in corn into sugar, so it would ferment," Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione told the New York Times.

Ceviche is a cool and delicious dish in which raw fish is marinated in fresh citrus juice. The acid of the juice "cooks" the fish until it is firm and plump. It's a wonderful Summer course that can be served as an appetizer with tortilla chips or placed atop a bed of greens as an entree.

The other night I found myself at Nopa, a San Francisco restaurant known for its great food and equally respectable drinks. My drink of choice was the pisco sour, the slightly sweet, tart, frothy lemon cocktail made with pisco, a regional South American brandy. This is a wonderful concoction and I'm excited to re-create it at home.If you don't own pisco, you can find it at a well-stocked liquor store or online.

I love the gracefully awkward name of the alstroemeria flower, which is named after a Swedish baron named Clas Alströmer. This variety is one of my favorites to decorate with because of its long vase life. Buy a bunch when the buds are closed, and the blooms stay looking lovely for weeks.

Good news! The alleged Peruvian gang that murders people and steals their fat may not be the gruesome reality it seemed when the story first came out last month. Now, Time is reporting that police involved in illegal activities — and perhaps even a government-run death squad — may have fabricated the story as a cover-up.

A celeb client of Danny Seo's had these cringe-worthy dog stairs by her bed, but her pooch couldn't part with them. So, it was unanimously decided that they needed a chic facelift. Seo hopped over to a flea market in Los Angeles, where he picked up a vintage Peruvian rug for around $30.

2009 was a pretty scandalous year in all regards, and that includes the beauty industry. Photoshop got banned in Britain, famed corporations went under, spa services were declared carcinogenic, and a mysterious gang of Peruvians may or may not have been murdering people for their fat and selling it to cosmetics companies. Yep, it was a wild year.

I can't think of a better time than now to present you with De*Nada, an emerging accessories line that gives a whole new meaning to the term cozy chic. It specializes in knits, more specifically beanies, gloves, and amazing roped scarves ($58). Peruvian designer Virginia Blanca Arrisueño started De*Nada — translating to you're welcome in Spanish — in 2005, and yearned to mix modern styles with ethnic touches.
