May 22 2009 - 3:30am A week ago, nonconformist food writer Anthony Bourdain, slow food queen Alice Waters, and celebrity pastry chef Duff Goldman
took the stage at Food For Thought, a panel discussion that took place in Hartford, CT. There, the three rather different famous food figures discussed, among many other subjects, sustainable food, last meals, celebrity status, and food aphrodisiacs.
Waters made no mention of Bourdain's recent comments about her — in an interview with DCist, he
spewed, "Alice Waters annoys the living s**t out of me .

a... week...ago. This is old news in foodie land.
1I'm liking Anthony Bourdain less and less (just read his book) although I'll still watch his show and see what he has to say. CaterpillarGirl, where do you go for your foodie news?
2it's such an odd match up there -but i guess that is supposed to make for good conversation. i'm not much of a fan of 2 out of 3...but oh well. i guess i'm partial to Duff since we went to the same school.
3He's right on about Alice Waters. Can't stand her.
Finally I actually agree with him on something!

5Love him
6I love Duff. I never heard of the other two on the panel. Watching this clip, however, I don't care for Mr. Bourdain's delivery. I agree with him on only a couple of points (very minor ones at that), but his delivery sucks, he comes across as rude, belligerent and superior. I'm all for having an opinion and being allowed to state said opinion, I just wish more people could do it in a more dignified, classy, open minded way.
7Actually, I don't think the videos came out until yesterday!
8Is Alice Waters a "PURE & SINCERE" Sustainability Advocate or just "COMMERCIAL ORIENTED" Sustainability Advocate?
Here's what is on Wikipedia about her. IMHO ... why in hell is she out to decimate the Shark Population?
Her Chez Panisse Restaurant web page says: "All our produce, meat, poultry, and fish come from farms, ranches, and fisheries guided by principles of sustainability." [5]
9On May 14, 2009, Waters said that ".... she would like to have shark fin soup as a final meal." [6] "That doesn't sound very sustainable or local!" quipped Bourdain with a lighthearted smirk. Quipped a leading sustainability advocate: "If it is served as Alice's final meal, how about renourishing the sharks in San Francisco Bay with Leg of Alice ... that would seal her fate as the ultimate in sustainability!" The Sea Shepherd Society say that "[t]his soup has no flavor and absolutely no nutritional value. It is a dish served only for prestige purposes." [7]
What was Duff doing there? It just seems like he'd just be sitting there while those two went on and on.
10I WAS THERE...Anthony and Duff were great- funny, insightful and relatable! Alice on the other hand came off as a bore and insufferable. Her holier than thou attitude infused every comment. And get her response to what she would like for her last meal- "Sharkfin Soup"!!! Anthony's response to her, "That ain't local!!" Great idea, Mrs. Sustainable!!
11It reminds me a lot of the breastfeeding debate. Alice may be right; it's better for us to eat local, sustainable, pesticide- and hormone-free food, but it feels like she expects everyone to be able to afford to eat like that all the time. If you can't afford it, guilt. (Sure, breast may be best, but some women can't do it for whatever reason and those who keep harping on it as the only way are just creating a lot of unnecessary ill-will.)
However, I do think you can afford to move toward eating the Alice way by eating less meat, more locally-grown vegetables, or even by investing in a quarter of a cow or pig that's been raised locally (especially if you're living somewhere rural where that kind of thing is inexpensive and ubiquitous). My country cousins have freezers full of cheap meat raised sustainably by themselves or by family or friends.
12LOVE, LOVE, L-O-V-E Anthony Bourdain!! It's true though. How many people are actually going to FINE dining restaurants during this time? People need to enjoy themselves when eating gourmet food. Daily, yes, try to be more aware of what you are eating, where it comes from, etc. But for a FINE dining experience? Enjoy the experience!
