Trend Alert: Restaurants With Beer Lists

"Would you like to see the beer list?" may sound like a silly question, until you realize how serious some restaurants are taking their beer selections these days. I recently had dinner at a restaurant in San Francisco called The Monk's Kettle, which actually suggests beer pairings alongside its entrees. Good thing, too, since the intimidating beer menu features more than 100 brews.

The whole experience really made me appreciate the rich variety of beer and how the different flavors complement certain foods - something I usually only think about with wine. Extensive beer lists, and the pairing of those beers with food, are definitely growing trends in restaurants, so to hear more about it, read more.

One of the quickfire challenges on this season of Top Chef had the cheftestants creating dishes to pair with beer, and the trend isn't limited to TV shows.

One beer aficionado in New York City has created an entire website, called Beer Menus, devoted to spotlighting beer lists at restaurants and bars. Places like Monk's Kettle in SF and Beerbistro in Toronto focus on acquiring a wide variety of brews and cooking dishes to match. Some restaurants are even hiring beer sommeliers to handle the task.

Next week is St. Patrick's Day, a national holiday celebrating Irish heritage . . . or a really fun day of green beer, pinches, and kissing. You may be getting inspired to plan your own themed party, but I'm thinking about the myriad parties in movies I've watched over the years. The wild college party in Old School with an appearance by Snoop Dogg (and streaking), the graduation bash in Can't Hardly Wait, and the Valley party in Clueless are just a few of the onscreen celebrations I wish I could have gone to.

Light Beer: Love It or Hate It?

The other day I went to Tommy's Joynt, a San Francisco institution, for the first time. The establishment serves up hearty food (it was featured on Triple D) and has an extensive list of beers from all over the world. My sister ordered an amber ale, but I wanted a light beer and asked the bartender for an exotic recommendation. While I was sipping the lighter-style lager from Kenya, I realized I never drink dark beers. Why? I simply love light ones! How about you?

Bloated? These Foods May Be the Culprit

The gift of a bloated belly isn't only reserved for women during that time of the month. Sometimes it's the foods we eat that can cause that full, gassy feeling. Here's a list of foods that may be contributing to your balloon-like belly, so you may want to think about limiting or avoiding them.

Dairy products: Lactose intolerance can range from mild to severe, but either way, gas is usually a symptom. Try limiting the amount of milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream you eat and see if that helps. If it does, you don't have to ditch dairy altogether. Drink lactose-free milk, or take Lactaid pills to help your body digest milk products.
Apples and pears: These fruits contain about four grams of fiber per serving, so they're an excellent source of soluble fiber, but they can also wreak havoc on sensitive tummies. Don't avoid them entirely though. Eating half or a quarter of these fruits along with other foods will allow you to enjoy their flavor without paying the price.
Beans: This magical fruit contains oligosaccharide, a type of sugar which is not normally digestible by our bodies. When this sugar reaches your large intestine, the bacteria go to town eating it up, and the gas you produce is an unfortunate byproduct.

Broccoli, cabbage, and asparagus: These highly nutritious veggies are often avoided because many people don't appreciate the odoriferous outcome. The reason these veggies cause gas is due to raffinose. This sugar goes undigested until it reaches the large intestine, where it's fermented by methane-producing bacteria. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to cut down on the gas they produce, but eating them in moderation and with other foods should help prevent a bloated belly afterward.
Fatty foods: According to the Mayo Clinic, "Fat slows down digestion, giving food more time to ferment.'" It also increases the sensation of fullness.
Salty foods: Sodium may not cause gas, but it definitely makes you retain water. Cut back on the salt you add to foods, and be a label reader to make sure you're not exceeding 2,300 mg a day.
Gum and hard candy: When you chew or suck on these, you end up swallowing more often, which means you're probably swallowing more air.
Carbonated beverages: Bubbly drinks such as soda and beer release carbon dioxide which can translate to bloat.

What Was Your Favorite Super Bowl Ad?

Time for a post-Super Bowl water cooler debate: this year's ads! I'm still scratching my head over the multiple spots featuring men in underwear, but a few made me chuckle without resulting to stripping down (I'm looking at you, Go Daddy). Take the celebrity cameos, for instance. I loved Betty White's "That's not what your girlfriend said" line for Snickers, but I was also excited for the return of the Griswolds and a watch party with Letterman, Oprah, and Leno. How the heck did Dave get Jay to help promote his own late-night show?!

In the category of amusing to downright silly, T-Pain auto-tune for Bud Light was goofy in a good way, and the Kia Sorrento spot which had a sock monkey and his toy friends on a joyride made me smile. But at the top of my list for sure: Google's relationship web search, which was unexpectedly sweet in the midst of all the beer-chugging and screaming chickens.

1.) James Franco, is at the top of the list, for obvious reasons. He's scorchingly hot, possesses a massive intellect, and happens to be super talented, to boot.

2.) Michele Williams makes amazing films, and, as a mother of three, I can appreciate the amount of effort she seems to put into raising her equally beautiful daughter.

3.) Ryan Gosling, who I feel is the next great talent of my generation. Plus, he seems like he would be really cool to drink a beer with.

4.) Maggie Gyllenhaal can do no wrong in my book. From the film roles she chooses to her choice of husband, she's got GREAT taste.

5.) Speaking of Ms. Gyllenhaal's husband, I just saw An Education. Peter Saarsgard is smokin', even when he's playing a lying perv. They should call it An Achievement.

6.) To heck with the naysayers, I happen to think Kristen Stewart is very gifted, and a lip-chewing problem is not going to change that. I would love to pick her brain. She just really seems to march to the beat of her own drum.

7.) Okay, this one's purely superficial. Sam Worthington. Wow. Just ...... wow.

8.) Zooey Deschanel is cute as a button, has starred in some of my favorite quirky comedies, and has a set of amazing pipes I could listen to all day long.

9.) I've had a crush on Joshua Jackson since I was 7, and I still have the hots for him, all these years later. Ducks fly together.

10.) I love True Blood, and Anna Paquin is a big part of why. The gap between her teeth is gorgeous, she's totally fierce on the red carpet, and her portrayal of Sookie Stackhouse is priceless.

I Don't Like My Boyfriend's Friends - Advice?

I hang out with my boyfriend almost every day and we both have plans to be with each other for a long time. He's the only person I've ever really loved but it's starting to become apparent that I am emotionally sensitive and somewhat untrusting of him. I feel like I should be his number two priority, next to his family, but sometimes I feel like I'm at the bottom of the list.

He brings his friends over once a week to hang out and drink, and this never used to bother me. But as time goes on I feel like hanging out with me is never good enough for him, because even when we're on dates, he will be texting and answering calls the whole time. I don't like his friends because they are all very immature and their lives seem to center around drinking (my boyfriend is 27 and all his friends are 21). Some of them are actual alcoholics, drinking every single night until the sun comes up. Now as you can imagine, I do not like hanging out with these people (who would want to be around a bunch of immature alcoholics?). I don't like how my boyfriend acts around his friends because the only way he can relate to them is through alcohol. He will end up hugging beer cans in his hand the whole night, forgetting I am even there.

I've told my boyfriend how I feel and he always tells me I am overreacting. So basically what I want to ask is am I overreacting? I just feel as though it is time for my boyfriend to grow up and acquire more responsible friends who we can both enjoy hanging out with.
