Give Black and White Cookies a Halloween Makeover

One of the girls here at the Sugar HQ recently received several boxes of black and white cookies. She grew up on Long Island and desperately missed the quintessentially New York treat. Luckily she shared the cookies with me, and I instantly fell in love! I immediately knew I wanted to find a recipe and give this classic east coast treat a try in my San Francisco kitchen. Black & Orange Cookies
From Food & Wine magazine

Cookies
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons cake flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs, at room temperature
2 large egg yolks, at room temperature
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 teaspoons milk
Icing
2 3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Orange food coloring, or red and yellow combined
2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped

Make the cookies: preheat the oven to 350°; position 2 racks in the upper and middle thirds of the oven. Line 3 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Sift the cake flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt onto a large sheet of wax paper. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar at medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs and yolks one at a time, beating well between additions. Beat in the vanilla and milk. At low speed, beat in the dry ingredients until just combined.
Spoon rounded tablespoons of the batter onto the baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Bake the cookies for about 12 minutes, until the centers spring back when lightly pressed. Be careful not to let the cookies brown or overbake, or they will be dry. Transfer the cookies, flat-side up, to a wire rack and let cool completely.
Meanwhile, make the icing: in a medium bowl, whisk the confectioners' sugar with the boiling water until smooth. Add the vanilla extract and a few drops of food coloring and whisk until the icing is evenly colored. Using a small offset spatula, spread the orange-colored icing over half of the flat side of each cookie.
In a microwave oven, melt the chocolate in a small bowl. Stir the chocolate into the remaining orange icing. Spread the chocolate icing on the other half of each cookie and let stand until set, about 15 minutes. (If the icing becomes too thick, add hot water, 1 teaspoon at a time, until smooth and shiny.)

The black-and-orange cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

Rumour has it black and white cookies are an East coast delicacy. But I swear my mum knows of a bakery in Berkeley, CA, that makes them. TGS 2009: Nintendo Announces Wii Price Drop

You may not be able to get your hands on the black Wii console like the Japanese - I got a chance to see it up close while in Japan this week and can attest to its sexiness - but soon you can get yourself a regular ol' white one for a little less dough.

Announced at this year's Tokyo Game Show, the Wii will be available for $200 starting this Sunday. Perfect timing for the holiday shopping season (and assumed holiday shortage), Nintendo is aligning itself with the entry-level Xbox 360, which while coming in at the same price, boasts lots more features (like Netflix streaming for example). So although the Wii has been one tough cookie to find on store shelves, it's obvious that Nintendo wants to stay competitive. Or maybe there's a new model coming? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I finally saw I Love You, Man and now Rashida Jones is on my girldar. She has a unique look and just seems like a cool, down-to-earth chick- and this is what her fashion choices tell me, too. At the LA premiere of Funny People she looked chic in separates. While her black and white tubular skirt is lovely, her curvacious blazer denotes modernity. Without the curvy silhouette, her ensemb would have been vanilla, with it, it's cookies and cream. See what I mean?

Glycemic Index: Where Do Sweeteners Fall?

If you don't know much about the glycemic index (GI), it could be affecting your health. The GI ranks specific carbohydrates from zero to 100, based on how they affect your blood sugar levels after eating them. Typically, eating foods that have a high GI (such as white bread and soda) causes a spike in blood sugar levels. When you consume these foods, you may feel a surge of get-up-and-go at first, but will have an energy crash soon afterward. High GI foods have also been linked to an increased risk for cancer, type 2 diabetes, acne, Alzheimer's, and weight gain. Foods that are low on the GI have been associated with feeling full, which can prevent you from overeating.

Sweeteners are a type of carbohydrate that are tough to avoid since many people crave sweet foods such as chocolate, cookies, candy, and ice cream. All these treats are made with different types of sweeteners, so when cooking or choosing foods, it's good to know how they compare. Karlie Kloss Reveals Her Model BFFs, Spring Must Haves, and Nudity

When I spy a tall, thin, blonde slowly gliding down the runway, head slightly tilted down, eyes focused, staring, I know exactly who it is: American model Karlie Kloss. The 16-year-old, who has recently taken up blogging on Modelfeed, has an unparalleled presence; she's cute-as-a-button approachable and intensely mysterious at the same time. I chatted with the modeling sensation about how she was discovered, her model posse, and what she's wearing these days.

How were you discovered?

Doing a charity fashion show in a mall in St. Louis for a friend who was battling cancer.

Has your ballet dance experience helped you on the catwalk or with your stamina?

Ballet has helped me express myself on photo shoots, and on the catwalk gives me the confidence to move with the fabrics.

Do you ever get embarrassed or uncomfortable with the nudity that modeling demands?

I am still 16 so my agency won't allow me to do nudity of any sort.

Tripping on the runway after closing the Pucci show in Milan.

How do you pass the time waiting around for the action to begin?

I just talk to my girlfriends, and of course BlackBerry my agent Stephen, and eat cookies in the corner with the girls.

Yes, I have lots. Jourdan Dunn is a close friend. I love Karmen Pedaru, and Catherine McNeil is cool to bake stuff with; they both live in my building. Abbey Lee is always cool to hang out with.

Favorite photo shoot destination?

I always wanted to shoot in Disney World. Probably shooting British Vogue with Patrick Demarchelier in an island off Sweden.

What are your Spring must haves?

White t-shirts, jeans, and whatever trade the designers will be throwing my way.
