Last weekend I was struck by a very intense craving for one of my nostalgic childhood foods, so I hightailed it to the grocery store to buy some frozen waffles. I've said before that some of the best sandwiches evoke memories, and this recipe goes back when I was maybe 7 or 8, and my mom fixed me some waffles before realizing we were out of syrup. She improvised to make this sandwich, and "peanut butter and jelly waffles" soon became one of my favorite meals.Like the nonwaffly version, this PB&J is very easy to make and can inspire countless variations: almond instead of peanut butter, different flavors of waffles or even waffles from scratch, honey in place of jelly, Elvis-style with bananas, and on and on. Starbucks sure is indecisive. Last January it announced that breakfast sandwiches would be pulled from its stores. Then in July it changed its mind and simply modified the sandwich recipe. Now Starbucks has decided to expand the breakfast sandwich menu! Next week the coffee giant will introduce the Piadini, a stuffed breakfast sandwich made on artisan bread with either sausage, egg, and cheese or mushroom, spinach, and ricotta fillings. To ensure that the new sandwiches get maximum exposure, Starbucks is putting ovens in 800 more stores. Changing the menu is nothing new; earlier this month Starbucks added oatmeal, apple bran muffins, and multigrain rolls to the morning menu and within the next year, the company plans to broaden the lunch menu.

Krispy Kreme's New Plan: Smaller Stores and Soft-Serve

After three years of floundering sales, Krispy Kreme has unveiled a new business plan. The doughnut chain famous for its hot-off-the-line, melt-in-your-mouth glazed doughnuts will roll out its own brand of soft-serve ice cream, Kool Kreme. The company also plans to open smaller-sized stores and expand its overseas market share.

Later this year the Winston-Salem, NC-based company plans to open smaller, less costly stores. Shops continue to open, with new franchises outside the United States, in Puerto Rico and Australia.

Kool Kreme has already been tested in markets such as such as Tacoma, WA, and will feature flavors such as Very Vanilla and Deep Chocolate, along with a toppings bar. Krispy Kreme is clearly trying to capitalize on the growing trend of frozen yogurt stores such as Pinkberry and Tasti-D-Lite, but I can't help but think that this move comes a year or two too late, as big cities have already become oversaturated with frozen dessert options. Jack in the Box Expands Breakfast Menu

Jack in the Box has announced its plan to jump on the fast-food breakfast bandwagon with its new Breakfast Bowl, an entire, portable meal. A mix of eggs, hash browns, cheese, peppers, and meat, the dish is a "Sunday brunchworthy meal" to be "enjoyed on a weekday schedule." Jack in the Box hopes to satisfy consumers' need for a hearty breakfast on the go.

Of the fast-food giants, currently McDonald's has the highest amount of breakfast sales. Only time will tell if Jack in the Box's Breakfast Bowls will become as popular as the Egg McMuffin. In other breakfast news, Denny's will compete with the Breakfast Bowls with its new to-go meal that involves a two-tier takeout container filled with bacon, eggs, and pancakes.

Starbucks: Still Chewing on Breakfast Sandwiches

In a last-minute change of heart, Starbucks has decided to keep its breakfast sandwiches on the menu. Last January the coffee giant announced that it would be pulling all of its breakfast sandwiches from stores this September. The reason? Their pungent smell interfered with the in-store coffee aroma. Now, Starbucks says it plans to modify the sandwich recipe, swapping the cheese and using less butter:

We are not reversing our decision to replace the breakfast sandwiches, but rather we are continuing to evolve our food offerings. We have found small ingredient changes that address the aroma issues of our current breakfast sandwiches, and have implemented these already.

This change comes in light of Starbucks's many Wall Street woes, which include closing 600 stores and trying to gain smoothie market share. No doubt the website that's petitioning to keep the hot breakfast item is ecstatic about the development. What are your thoughts?

After attending a very long party on Saturday night, I stopped at San Francisco's Kate's Kitchen and was delighted to see an item had been added to the menu since my last visit: The Lauren Special.This egg and sausage sandwich is way better than your basic breakfast biscuit. A little while back, YumSugar tasted and reviewed Batter Blaster, the pancake batter in a bottle. While she used the squirt-able batter to make surprisingly good-tasting pancakes, our friends at Grocery Eats recently used their batter blaster to make deep-fried pancakes. At first glance, these crispy pancakes look like delicious funnel cakes. But reading the fine print, one can see they are incredibly oily. I found this hard to believe as most of the people I know rarely have the chance to eat breakfast. Say Farewell to Herb Peterson, Inventor of the Egg McMuffin

Folks, it's a sad day in the breakfast world. Herb Peterson, the 89-year-old inventor of the Egg McMuffin, passed away Tuesday at his home in Santa Barbara. While most may not be familiar with his name, they are definitely familiar with his creations. In addition to coming up with McDonald's first national slogan, "Where Quality Starts Fresh Every Day," and creating Ronald McDonald's outfit, he introduced the world to the deliciousness that is the Egg McMuffin. He created the sandwich for McDonald's in 1972, and the fast-food breakfast world was never again the same. What began at his McDonald's franchise in Santa Barbara soon spread across the nation and was happily gobbled up by millions. It's been a while since I've had one — I'm never early enough for breakfast! — but I'm going to have to remedy that so I can raise a proper ~~toast~~ muffin to Herb.

This year, instead of planning a blowout bash for New Year's Eve, invite everyone over for a New Year's Day brunch.
