John Mayer Wants You to Get Your Holiday Bake On

Pop singer John Mayer, a guy whose not afraid to say what he needs to say, wants everyone to get in the holiday spirit. How should they show their seasonal cheer? By baking a cake. On his personal blog, Mayer has announced his holiday cake contest:

I will debut my first of several festive holiday cakes this Saturday night. I invite everyone reading this to join me in the simple joy of expression through baking, and to send me photos of your delicious creations. You think I'm crazy now, but once you apply the last dollop of frosting, or that finishing touch of icing, you'll understand that there's just no hiding from the feeling.

Mayer will choose the most beautiful cake and reward the baker with an autographed guitar. It's always fun to see a high profile celebrity show an interest in the culinary world and he's right: baking is a great way to get in the holiday spirit!

Last week I was asked to make a sweet contribution to BabySugar's baby shower. Since the shower was a surprise, I decided what kind of cake to make. Although cheesecakes squares or macaroons are delightful options, my birthday party won't be complete without a birthday cake. Chocolate cake is my favorite and this interesting twist on the classic German chocolate cake is unexpected and scrumptious.

This buttercream-frosted cake, a 14-inch replica of the globe, was created by celebrated cake designer Sylvia Weinstock. Made for Travel+Leisure's art auction, Project Globe, the cake costs $2,265 and feeds 100. I think the cake is incredible and would love to know how it was made and how it retains the circular shape. The President's daughter, Jenna Bush, was recently married in a lavish but down-to-earth wedding at her family's ranch in Texas. Few details have been released about the ceremony, reception, and menu but rumor has it the cake was created by the Ultimate Cheesecake Bakery. The tres leches/dulce de leche cake had whipped cream frosting and fresh floral arrangements. By the time this photo was taken, the top tier of the confection had started to fall. While it's sad the top was tilting, it's probably something the happy couple will laugh about for years to come. Ever since I spoke to Pat and Gina Neely, I've wanted to make their famous strawberry shortcut cake. Last weekend, I finally got around to making this divinely delicious dessert that combines vanilla cake with fresh strawberries, whipped cream, and strawberry gelatin.

This past weekend TeamSugar member eclaireassuch held a Kentucky Derby Party and created a fantastic cake to go along with it. She decorated a chocolate-nutella cake with intricate red roses — like the ones the winner wears — and topped that with a ring of horses.

After the tragic end where Eight Belles died, she knocked one of the horses over. She admits now, it was probably in poor taste. Yet, I still have to admire her creation. What do you guys think? Despite the dark humor, don't you want to just dive head first into that ring of roses?!

I like to think I have a pretty open mind when it comes to food and treats. And yet even I have to wonder why on earth someone would want a toilet seat cake. Maybe it would be a good gag for a plumber, but the realness of it is sort of wrong. However it's in big enough demand that there's a company that sells the seat covers for them. What started as a one-time request has apparently turned into a business, and you can buy the chocolate toilet seats ($13) for your toilet cakes. With every purchase you get all the directions and the personal guidance on how to build the cake. So tell me, would you eat it? Would you eat a toilet cake?

Cakes Minus Parchment Paper = Fail

Whenever I make a cake, I usually use a bit of parchment paper on the bottom of the pan. This way the cake won't stick to the pan and I'll have nice and even surface to work with. I either cut out a square or circle to fit the bottom of the pan, or I create a parchment-paper sling.

I was checking out the posts on TeamSugar when I came across this one in the Cake Decorators Unite! group. Group founder ashleyk4214 really stepped up her game and created this gorgeous cake for a wedding this past weekend. It's a French vanilla cake with blueberry filling and vanilla buttercream icing. I finally got around to making the internet's most-clicked chocolate cake recipe last weekend. The recipe is simple and easy to make, and the resulting cake is dense and delicious. However, I didn't think this was the best chocolate cake ever. It's definitely good, but I'm not desperate to make it again.

The cook time given for the cake was over an hour, but mine finished in about 35 minutes, so be sure to check it while baking. Also, allow plenty of time for the frosting to cool and thicken, at least an hour for a rich consistency.
