With different foods being recalled almost every other month, food-borne illnesses are on everyone's mind a bit more. We use those expiration dates stamped on boxes, cans, and containers as guidance of what to toss and what is safe to eat. Since money is tight, folks are relying on the sniff test more than the printed "sell-by" date.

Yesterday I listed 12 foods to avoid on a first date, and most of you had your fair share to say on the subject — looks like we all have issues with certain ingredients! On the flip side though, there are some foods that can actually bring an element of flirtation to a meal. I've always been a fan of sharing, so here is my list of six foods that can heat up a meal on a first date.

My friend DearSugar offered some great tips on keeping your diet in check while dating, and here's another one. When dining out with your significant other, a great way to prevent consuming a day's worth of calories in one sitting is to order one entrée and share it. But before your meal arrives, ask your server for two separate plates.

I think how you order on a date says a lot about your personality, but I think it's fun to share food too! Even if you're not sitting side by side, leaning in close to eat off the same plate can bring a different kind of intimacy to the evening. Since I'm not a germaphobe, I'm all for this kind of dining, but I know people who wouldn't even fathom the thought of sharing food or utensils, especially with a semi-stranger.
