Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, it's a known fact that the employees at Google live a charmed life. Besides massages and Internet-wired shuttles, Googlers are invited to free breakfast, lunch, and dinner each and every day. The Google campus has 17 gourmet cafés, complete with 700 culinary staffers and 20 chefs.

This week's episode of FlashForward was a bit blah for me. The plot made a teeny bit of headway, but now that we're four episodes deep, I was hoping things would pick up a bit this week. Instead, the FBI agents head to DC to score funding for the Mosaic investigation — using any methods necessary.

When public television chef Ming Tsai spoke at last year's Classic, I learned that he was wildly hilarious. Thus, at this year's festival, I couldn't wait to catch some more laughs. Ming shared tips for East-West cuisine while making blue cheese burgers and bacon potstickers, a ginger margarita, and a tempura shrimp cocktail.

I was all over my favorite faux URLs from movies a couple of weeks ago, but I have their king, courtesy of upcoming movie Julie and Julia. The film, which parallels the lives of famous chef Julia Child and her admirer years later, blogger Julie Powell, is based on a true story, but the technology isn't, necessarily.
Her blogging platform in the movie is a fakey called "Blogspot@salon.com", a seeming mash-up of Google's Blogger/Blogspot service and Salon, which did provide Powell's platform.

Though I'm the first person to screech "Google it!" I definitely still hit the books when I need a recipe: the Joy of Cooking, anyway. But if it's not in there, I have my laptop open in the time it takes to preheat the oven.

In honor of the first anniversary of the Google New York office, staffers celebrated by creating a cake to look exactly like their entire office building—which just so happens to span a full city block! With the help of Google Earth and Google street view, pastry chef Danita Holt was able to draw up blueprints to begin the process of building such a ginormous cake. After four days, cafe director Kevin McConvey alongside two sous chefs, two pastry chefs, an executive chef and a line cook were able to finish the five feet long, three feet high and two feet wide Googleplex cake which contained 630 eggs, 105 pounds of sugar and 20 pounds of butter!

Last Friday I grabbed my camera and headed down to the Google campus — home to more than 4000 Google employees — in Mountain View. Before chatting with chef Eric Dela Cruz, my Google girlfriend and I took a whirlwind tour of 7 of the 17 cafés during their two hour lunchtime. From whole roasted fish to Spanish tapas to fresh wheatgrass, the Google cafés have something to offer everyone.

Living in San Francisco, where Google is headquartered, I have heard plenty of tales of the company's unconventional office culture and environment, including free food mandates, excellent chefs, in-house masseuses, arcade rooms, off-site meetings in breweries and at fun spots like Disneyland, not to mention bouncy balls galore and tons of branded schwag. So, when I came across a photo of Google's Zurich office, I wasn't very surprised, so much as I felt a pang of jealousy — although, I can't complain about Sugar HQ's swank new space.
While bouncy balls also float freely there, you may, in addition, hold a conference in a gondola car bedecked in ski gear or wrapping in a fishing net, take a break on a massage chair in an aquarium, brainstorm with co-workers while sitting in a canoe, spend a delicate few competing in Guitar Hero, or shoot down to lunch on a playground slide.
