My grandfather is so unbelievably cool - think Austin Powers meets Frank Sinatra - that gift shopping for him is incredibly fun. He already owns everything from a fancy wine cooler to a digital meat thermometer, so I have to get super creative when looking for gifts. I suggest you do the same when searching for the perfect gift for gramps. Customized matches with his name or initials and gourmet, comfort food like lobster pot pie are two wonderful options. Or ask everyone in the family to donate money to buy a case of Champagne. This is a gift that he can enjoy with grams (or his lady friends!) and the entire fam when they come to dinner. I don't know how I missed Little Billy's Letters in March's Must Reads! It's a collection of correspondence humorist Bill Geehart had, while posing as a precocious 10-year-old boy, with celebrities, politicians, and criminals, and assorted infamous people. And their responses!

McCain Attends 50th Reunion and My Exclusive Age Research

John McCain is heading to the Naval Academy for his 50th class reunion this weekend. By that complicated math, you can figure it means he graduated in 1958. McCain will definitely be attending the football game this afternoon between Navy and Rutgers.

The pending reunion and longtime, er, awareness of McCain's age led me to conduct a highly scientific opinion poll of his relative fitness to serve among those who might best know: my grandpa's table mates at his retirement home. Of the five senior citizens assembled, three men and two women, the youngest was 85 years old, the oldest was 91. When asked the question, "Is John McCain too old to be president?" the answer split evenly on gender lines. Both women said that yes, in their opinion 72 was too old to be starting a first term as president. Specifying the first term keeps Ronald Reagan in mind, presumably, who was 72 when campaigning for his second term.

The men saw it entirely differently. To them, 72 was just a "young man," and given his time as a POW, they felt he had more than proved his physical rigor, making his health not a concern. Keeping in mind the youngest man in the survey was McCain's age 13 years ago, does their experience with the age - and how they've felt since - provide a convincing argument?

While you consider that, for the record and in the interest of scientific transparency, it was a survey over spaghetti, not soup . . .

50 First Dates: Such a sweet and silly movie, and it warms your heart to see Lucy's (Drew Barrymore) protective dad and "little" brother trying so hard to keep her happy by recreating the same day for her everyday. That's love!
Anne of Green Gables: I will never get tired of watching this movie. It goes to show that your real family in life doesn't need to be connected to you by blood, but by heart. Watching Anne, Aunt Marilla and Matthew become a family and discover their love for one another is a beautiful tear-jerker that I am always willing to re-watch.
Best in Show: Dogs (and pets in general) are perhaps the most important family members - they are unconditionally loyal and loving, no matter how crazy their owners may be!
Bridget Jones' Diary: Anyone who has ever been embarassed and depressed by eccentric relatives will feel a friend in Bridget's horrific parents, particularly when Bridget's mother uses her daughter as a sounding board for her sex life outside of her marriage.
Father of the Bride (w/Steve Martin): Such a cute story, and a wonderful film for any daughter who has a slightly exasperating, over-protective, frugal father who she loves. I think it's a general rule that at least one family member is guaranteed to freak out when you're about to get married.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off: Hilarious family dynamic that hits on certain truths - why do youngest siblings seem to get away with EVERYTHING??!
Liar Liar: Classic Jim Carrey, and a fun reminder to always put your family first, no matter how busy you are.
Little Women: I don't have a sister, but every time I watch this I understand why so many of my acquaintances name their sisters as their best friends. This is a timeless story that shows that family members can be as different as night and day and still find happiness and common ground.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding: I've never watched this movie with anyone without having someone say, "That character is JUST like my Aunt/Uncle/Cousin So-and-So..." This movie shows that no matter how crazy your family makes you, love and eccentricity is the spice of life.
Pride and Prejudice (BBC version): Along the same theme as Bridget Jones, but it's somewhat comforting to know that the elegent young women of Jane Austen's era still had nutty family members to deal with.
Return to Me: This chick flick would be a lot more forgettable if it wasn't for the ADORABLE Italian-Irish grandpa and his jolly cohorts, who all care for Grace (Minnie Driver) as if she was their own daughter. A bonus is Bonnie Hunt's character, a mother whose life with her husband and rambunctious kids is hilariously hectic.

I've already given you holiday gift ideas for dad, mom, grandma, and now it's time to round out the group with suggestions for grandpa. What to get a patriarch who loves watching the tube, going to the movies, and listening to music? I have a few ideas, coming from my own grandfather, who loves Frank Sinatra (and will therefore be so jazzed about this CD and DVD box set), The Godfather, and updated versions of film classics. Maybe you'll find an idea from these picks too!

Brad Shops With Shiloh and Zahara as Angelina Balances Thrillers

Brad Pitt spent his afternoon shopping around Paris with Shiloh and Zahara. The trio stopped off at the children's shop Bonpoint, while across the city Angelina Jolie was hard at work filming The Tourist. The Jolie-Pitt gang is in France following their few fun days in Venice, which included a visit from grandpa Jon Voight and a chance to sample the local delicacies. Angelina is busy with her current film, but another project of hers is also in headlines. She announced her involvement in a series based on Patricia Cornwell's novels last year, and the author herself revealed production may start this Fall.

Gwen's Quick Change Leaves Kingston with Grandpa

Gwen Stefani traded a day at the park with Kingston for time with Grandpa this weekend. The mom-to-be dashed into her parents' house on Saturday in a tight black tank showing off that baby bump, and emerged later in her typical maxi style dress. Grandpa was left to babysit Kingston who beat the heat by going shirtless. Gavin and Grandpa are so involved in Kingston's life so we hope he has something special planned for Father's Day.

Buzz Gift Guide: Goodies For Gramps

Welcome back, folks, to the next installment of my Buzz Gift Guide series for all the entertainment lovers in your life. Yesterday I suggested some fun gifts for grandma (after tackling mom and dad), and that leaves us with grandpa!

The first thing I thought of for my grandpa was the soundtrack to AMC's hit show Mad Men. I know he'd enjoy the collection of tunes by artists like The Andrews Sisters, Bobby Vinton and Rosemary Clooney.

A lot of grandpas might also appreciate some help with ditching the old rabbit ears and updating to a digital converter. This model looked pretty sleek and shiny to me, and you can even help him apply for a coupon!

If your gramps is squared away technology-wise then he also might appreciate this Alfred Hitchcock DVD collection or the complete series of Get Smart.
