Orange and grapefruit juices are great sources of potassium and vitamin C, but some of you said you shy away from grapefruit — not because you don't love the taste, but because it interferes with the effectiveness of certain medications. It's true. There are chemical compounds in grapefruit known as furanocoumarins (FCs) that affect the enzymes in the intestines and liver that break down meds.

What breakfast is complete without a cold glass of juice? I love the flavor of both fresh-squeezed orange and grapefruit juices, but never thought about which was more healthy.
Since both are citrus fruits, they seem equally nutritious, but when I compared the two, there's more of a difference than I expected.

On New Years, I discovered a new favorite cocktail called the salty dog. No, it's not a strange concoction with hot dogs, but the cousin to the classic greyhound! Both the greyhound and salty dog combine fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice with vodka.

The other day, while I was at one of my favorite bars — Cantina — I had a delicious and refreshing drink made with fresh grapefruit juice. A variation on the classic caipirinha, the cocktail was on the menu for that night only. I wanted to run home and re-create the delightful concoction, but I couldn't remember the list of ingredients.

The 80's were chock full of fun fads like Duran Duran, leg warmers, and the very popular "Grapefruit Diet."
The diet consisted of no more than 800 calories a day (no wonder people lost weight). You ate grapefruit in the morning, grapefruit in your salad, and even used grapefruit juice in your cocktails (goes great with vodka).

I don't worry too much about vitamin C, since citrus fruits are high in the vitamin and eat some just about every day, especially during the Summer. This vitamin is beneficial for protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.
An adult woman doesn't need much — 75 mg of vitamin C a day.

HEALTH GUIDE REFERENCE FROM A.D.A.M
Highlights
New Research:
- Patients who have the most common type of gastric bypass surgery, the Roux-en-Y, are at increased risk for kidney stones, beginning 6 months after surgery, according to a study published in 2006.
Causes of Kidney Stones:
- Calcium stones form when there is an imbalance in the urine substances that promote and block the formation of stones. Often, the cause of this imbalance is unknown.
- Having acidic urine or too much uric acid in the body leads to the formation of uric acid stones.
- Struvite stones are almost always caused by urinary tract infections due to bacteria that produce certain enzymes.
- Other stones, including cystine and xanthine stones, are usually due to genetic abnormalities.
Treatments:
- In about 85% of patients, the kidney stones are small enough that they pass through normal urination, usually within 2 - 3 days.
- Certain medications can prevent recurrence of stones in people who are at high risk.
- Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a technique that uses sound waves (ultrasound) to break up simple stones in the kidney or upper urinary tract. The shock waves are delivered from outside the body.
- Surgery may be necessary if the stone or stones are too big to pass, and cannot be broken down through ESWL.
- A change of diet and increased drinking of fluids, especially water, will help prevent a recurrence.
Introduction
Kidney stones are hard, solid rocks that form in the urinary tract.

Indulging in a hot shower or bath is one of my favorite ways to reduce stress. Couple it with a sugar scrub, and it's just as good as a full-body massage — well, almost). Why buy a sugar scrub, when it's so easy to make your own?
