TV Tonight: The Season Finale of Greek

While college kids everywhere are about to head into that home stretch before finals, my favorite undergrads will be wrapping up another semester tonight on Greek. In the mid-season finale, we'll finally get to see Cappie and Casey as a couple again, but will it mean the end of Cappie and Evan's newfound friendship?

I admittedly was finally starting to warm up to Evan again, but the promos for tonight make it seem like he might be pulling a few jerk moves. I'm also wondering if he'll run back into Rebecca's arms after he finds out about Cappie and Casey. And does Rebecca have any leftover feelings for Cappie?

It's so hard to say good-bye, but there is one piece of good news - Greek will reportedly be back on Jan. 25, in a new time slot. So are you excited for tonight's finale?

Greek Goes From the Small Screen to the Bookshelves

TV adaptations of books are nothing new, but a book series based on an existing TV show? That's a bit more uncommon - but it's about to happen to one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Greek will be made into a four part series of "Tie-In Novels" for teenagers, following our favorite Cyprus Rhodes students in new adventures. The books will be published by Harlequin, and the first, called Double Date will make its debut next Spring.

I might be a bit too old for young adult novels, but I admit that I've combed through the Gossip Girl books during trips to Borders. I could see these being fun for plane rides - and let's be honest, we live in a society where L.A. Candy is a best-seller, so we know there's an audience that will eat these up, too.

Do Shows Like Gossip Girl Accurately Reflect College Life?

In an article in the New York Post today, real-life NYU students respond to Gossip Girl's depiction of NYU freshman orientation. What do they think of the show's fictional keg parties on rooftops, characters requesting who they want to room with to the Housing Office, and the notion that NYU is cheaper than Yale? (Here's a Buzz recap of this week's goings-on to refresh your memories!)

Although one blogger gives the thumbs up to the show's reference to an "Art & the World" class he actually took his freshman year at Tisch, another one disses the idea of a rooftop party. "Don't the writers know," he snipes, "that in NYU housing we're forbidden to peek outside of our windows for the slight chance that we might kill ourselves?"

Do shows like Gossip Girl and Greek reflect college experience (fairly) accurately or is it all just fun and fantasy?

Killer App: Greek Salsa

Lately I've been all about dips. OK that's somewhat of an understatement, since it seems I'm always all about dips. Seven-layer dip, nacho cheese dip, artichoke crab dip, Buffalo chicken cheese dip - you get the idea. Well, last week I tried out this recipe for Greek salsa, and it is officially my new favorite dip (for now)! It's everything one could ask for in a dip. It's super easy to prepare (especially when you let the food processor do the chopping), can be made in advance, and is deliciously addictive. Thanks to the wide variety of ingredients - tomatoes, cucumber, hot peppers, olives, feta cheese - it's incredibly layered in both texture and flavor. From creamy to spicy to briny to salty, each bite is different, but equally divine. Greek salsa would be an excellent addition to a tailgate or informal cocktail party, so get the recipe and read more.

Greek Salsa With Pita Crisps
From Sips and Apps by Kathy Casey

Ingredients

Pita Crisps
6 large pocket-style pita breads (about 12 ounces total)
3 tablespoons olive oil
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Salsa
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano
1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups finely diced ripe plum tomato (about 3 tomatoes)
3/4 cup finely diced, peeled, and seeded cucumber (about 1/2 a cucumber)
1/4 cup minced red onion
1 1/2 teaspoons minced fresh garlic
1 small yellow bell pepper, seeded and finely diced
1 cup (about 4 ounces) crumbled feta cheese
1/3 cup pitted kalamata olives, finely chopped
2 to 2 pickled or fresh hot cherry peppers, stemmed and minced

Directions

Make pita crisps: Preheat oven to 450°F.
Cut each pita into 8 triangles and then separate each triangle into 2 pieces.
In a large bowl combine olive oil and salt. Add the pita wedges and toss well coating them evenly with the oil mixture.
On two large baking sheets, spread out the pita wedges in a single layer. Bake for about 4 minutes, then turn the pieces over and continue baking for 4 to 5 minutes more, or until golden and crisp. Let cool before serving. The crisps can be made in advance, cooled, and stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Make salsa: combine the ingredients in a bowl and mix gently. Serve immediately with pita crisps.

Makes 4 cups.

Michael Rady on Moving From Cyprus Rhodes to Melrose Place

For a little while, it seems like Michael Rady has been everywhere, turning up on the small screen in Greek, Swingtown, and even Grey's Anatomy while also romancing Alexis Bledel in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies. At the CBS/CW party at the TCA Press Tour, I chatted with Rady about playing a nice guy, whether or not his Melrose engagement is doomed, and those Swingtown sideburns. Here are highlights:

How did you end up working on the new Melrose Place?
The first week of casting for Melrose Place, I went in, I didn't know anything about it, I think I had five auditions that day, and I left and they were like, "They want you." And I was like, "Really? No one wants me!" They were like, "Yeah, we like him." And then I booked it a couple of days later. And I was the first one cast. There was no script. It still hasn't quite sunk in yet - it's a little surreal.

When I saw you were cast in Melrose Place, I was of two minds about it - on the one hand, I was excited, and on the other, I was like, "Well, I guess I know what happens to Max on Greek."
Yeah - stumbling off drunk into the night, alone.

But then suddenly resurfacing here, a little more glamorous. Although Jonah seems pretty down-to-earth.
Yeah, he's the transplant from the East Coast and just comes from a grounded family, a good family situation.

Do you think he'll stay that way?
They swear up and down I would turn out good in the end. I think it's just this den of corruptibility, Melrose Place. So I think we'll get swept up here, and then spit out, and then swept up again, and then spit out.

It seems like there might be a chance on this show to play up the evil side.
It happened to Michael Mancini, right? No matter how much they swear I need to remember that: That this is Melrose Place and nothing is safe.

Were you a fan of the original Melrose Place?
I was only really aware of its existence. My older sister watched it. I was just sitting on the couch, "What are we watching?" "Melrose Place." I remember Heather Locklear and Grant Show, just beautiful people around a pool.

Now you're one of the beautiful people around the pool.
No, I'm around the pool. There's beautiful people around me.

Are there any folks from the original you'd particularly love to work with?
I had the biggest crush on Laura Leighton, oh my gosh. She's just class, class, class and beautiful and amazing. Whenever she gives answers at press junkets we're all like, "She's so good. She says all the right things." I'd love for Heather Locklear to come back. I think that could be a lot of fun for the show.

Maybe you could have an affair, because you know Jonah's engagement isn't going to work out . . .
It's not going to turn into a happy marriage. That's a crashing bore, too.

That relationship was actually one of my favorite parts of the pilot, though.
But you would not watch day in and day out if they were happily married, eating popcorn, watching movies at nighttime and snuggling together. Crashing bore. You wouldn't watch that. So, I mean, troubled waters. Gotta be.

Speaking of nice guys - on Greek, you were coming in and breaking up the Casey/Cappie relationship a lot of fans want to see, but you were also such a good guy.
It was so funny, because they were like, "We can't do anything and not be hated here. Because you're so nice!" Spencer [Grammer] would be like, "All right, how can we do this, because everyone's going to really like him here, and no one is going to like me at all." That was actually a fun game to play with each other, like, "You have to win here. I'm going to be as nice as I possibly can, and you have to beat that."

You were done filming Greek a while ago, right?
Yeah, I think January, I shot my last episode with them. I got Greek while I was doing Swingtown, so that's why Max had long, long sideburns and crazy, long, curly hair. I ended up having really long, ridiculous hair for a long time - it was very frustrating. We took a quarter-inch off the sideburns, like, every month. And meanwhile they're writing jokes about the sideburns into the script.

Can you give us any hints about what's coming up on Melrose to keep us watching after the pilot?
They all die. No. I have no idea!

TV Tonight: Greek Is Back!

I wish all my favorite shows only had about 10 weeks between seasons (or "chapters," or whatever). As it is, many of my most beloved series had finales around the beginning or middle of May and many of them don't return until the end of September. So it's a real treat that Greek ended its second chapter in the middle of June and now it's returning with new episodes tonight!

We left the Zeta Beta Zetas, Kappa Taus and Omega Chis back in June with the episode "At World's End" in which the Kappa Taus hosted an "end of the world" party. Casey decided it was time to end things with Max and revealed her lingering feelings for Cappie, who insisted it still wouldn't work between them. Meanwhile, Rusty and Jordan are still goofy-happy in love, Ashleigh seems to still like her boy Fisher, and Frannie left. When the gang returns tonight, Cappie finds out about Max leaving the school while Casey mopes about having been rejected, and Rusty's organic chemistry grades are falling, which means he may be dropped from the honors program. Calvin and Dale both admit to having broken their "purity pledges" at the party, and Rebecca has an idea for how Evan can make some money now that his parents have cut him off.

When I was putting together this slideshow featuring Greek cast members in their skivvies, I couldn't help but notice that this photo has prime captioning potential. I know I wouldn't mind being in Casey's shoes here, as long as Cappie were also in that line somewhere.

Greek Strips Down For Season Three!

Season three of Greek is just around the corner, and I can't wait to get back to re-living my college years with the kids at Cyprus Rhodes. At the TCA a few weeks ago, I caught up with Spencer Grammer who dished on what we can expect as senior year continues for Casey and the rest of the kids. What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. This week the new TV options are more exciting than the movies, so I'm making a few recommendations for shows to catch up on before Fall TV is here.

Gossip Girl: Season 2
Catch up on all the hot gossip with our favorite Upper East Siders with the second season of Gossip Girl. It's senior year, which means there's just as much scandal, romance, and heartbreak as the first season - plus a few new faces added to the mix.

Personal highlights include Jenny's brief stint as a runaway emo chick, Serena's short-lived relationship with a lame artist, and Chuck and Blair's never-ending, sexy roller coaster of emotions. Season three premieres on Sept. 14, so you've got a month to catch up on all the fun or just give yourself a refresher course. Special DVD features include a gag reel and unaired scenes.

Dexter: Season 3

If high school drama isn't your thing, try something a little more serious with season three of Dexter. Michael C. Hall returns as the mysterious forensics expert by day/serial killer by night in the thriller that always keeps us on our toes. It's not for the faint of heart, but the constant moral dilemma makes it easy to get sucked into Dexter's world. Season four of this Showtime show premieres Sept. 27, so you've got some time to catch up before Dexter is back and hunting down John Lithgow. I've got goosebumps already.

Greek: Chapter Three
Re-live your college days with the third season (excuse me, chapter) of my beloved Greek. The gang is back together for senior year, though a lot has changed at Cyprus Rhodes over the Summer. There are love triangles for both of the Cartwright sibs, while Cappie and Evan find themselves getting closer than expected. The new season premieres on Aug. 31, so grab a keg cup and get watching.
