Whether you're in Brattleboro, VT, or Ponca City, OK, you've got the pick of the crop when it comes to food events this weekend. I know there are Spam and strawberry festivals, but I'm new to the world of rhubarb and horseradish celebrations. What will you be attending?

I couldn't let National Grilled Cheese Month end without creating a wildly delicious grilled cheese sandwich. At first, I wanted to recreate Hog Island Oyster Company's famous three-cheese panini at home. However, I didn't have time to go to Cowgirl Creamery at the Ferry Building and pick up the exact cheeses the oyster place uses to make the 'wich.

Between writing about the new marketing push for Kraft Singles and Bobby Flay offering sandwich-making tips, I've had grilled cheese on the brain. I'm a particularly huge fan of Hog Island's version, as well as Party's rendition with taleggio, escarole, and onion jam. Today, I'm making a variation based on ingredients I have on hand: sweet butter, aged gruyere, and artisan Pugliese bread.

When dealing with Thanksgiving leftovers, sandwiches are an obvious choice — and believe me, I consumed my fair share of turkey and stuffing on wheat bread last week. But in a more unexpected repurposing, I also used the breadcrumb mixture leftover from my New Orleans-style baked oyster dish to make this twist on a grilled cheese.
In this case, the "bread" is actually sliced eggplant coated with breadcrumbs, and the cheese is provolone (though mozzarella would also be good with a marinara dipping sauce on the side).

Former Top Chef hostess and cookbook author Katie Lee Joel was crowned this year's queen of the Burger Bash. The event, which was hosted by Rachael Ray, was a part of the Food Network's NYC Wine and Food Festival. Joel was the only participating female among the 18 chefs who submitted burgers.
