Get the Look: Hipster Dude Haven

Is your man a hipster dude? Do his digs need to be decorated? This Get the Look will show you how to create a dude-worthy pad for your main squeeze, for which he will be forever grateful. If you get it right, maybe he'll take you out for green tea gelato and a Godard film!

The Palette: In one word, jumbled. No hipster dude haven should actually have a palette. That would be against the rules — anything goes for an apathetic decorator. Most of his furnishings and decorative accents can be described as found, hand-me-down, vintage, flea market, old, or belonging to his old roommate, Knoll (yes, named after the furniture designer). If by coincidence they match, it had nothing to do with him.

The Furniture: Furniture will be mostly street finds, or pieces left over from roommates past. That's not to say that your man doesn't have an eye for design - he does, but he'd never pay full price for original pieces. He might, though, find a Wassily Chair on the street with a broken seat and fix it by placing a task chair from his art studio class in the center of it. And he has hobbies, too - like pinball (a non-contact sport). So, he might buy a custom-built pinball coffee table from Craigslist. If you have to ask about the bed, then you should probably remember who you're dating. Mattress, no box spring, on the floor (sheets could use a wash).

The Lighting: Hipster dudes aren't really into lamps, unless you're talking about the Leg Lamp from A Christmas Story. But they do like conserving energy, so be sure to pick up some CFLs.

The Accents: Accents are key for an HD.

Walls. To start, the Lit major will definitely want a book poster featuring a title by his favorite author (Urban Outfitters Book Posters, $29.99). And he probably picked up a poster at the benefit event for the radio he DJ'd for in college (try Aesthetic Apparatus). To get his dose of rebellion, he might also go for a Che wall hanging ($15).
Bedding. For sheets, what could be more rad than a Pabst Blue Ribbon pillowcase ($12)? To keep himself warm, he'll use an afghan blanket he found in the basement closet of his mom's house — Grams crocheted it.
Tableware. If he's a smoker, he will likely ash in the vinyl record bowl that you DIY'd for him. Glassware will consist of odds and ends, including but not limited to plastic cups from Mardi Gras parades, Solo cups (which also make great ashtrays), and beer glasses stolen from his favorite watering hole.
Muzik. HD is into tunes, too, so he's got to have a vintage turntable to play his vast collection of records (he's been a collector since he was 5). But don't be fooled; he probably has a fancy new iMac hidden under his pile of clothes somewhere to play — gasp! — mp3s downloaded from Soulseek. He'll also need a vintage projector for aesthetics, and to throw a Wes Anderson-appreciation movie night in the park.
Bathroom. Every man loves the toilet throne, and yours also loves his bike, so a 10 Speed Vinyl Toilet Graphic is only appropriate. While he's in the bathroom, he might also like to lather up with a Poor Boy Beer Vegan-Friendly Soap Bar ($4.75) made from PBRs.

Hipster Girl

Like Valley Girl before it, Hipster Girl describes a chick du jour with all-too-recognizable traits. (Especially in my 'hood!) Although this girl's a little too clean and mall rat to be a true hipster girl (she's more Ashlee Simpson than Karen O), she's got all the hipster ingredients. She knows all the indie bands you've never heard of, she thinks uncool stuff is "mad cool," and she wears a Shins T-shirt with flip-flops. Sound familiar? Thanks for the send, Mimoreno47!

Gadget Hipster Belt: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

How many gadgets do you carry on average? Would you ever consider carrying them in a special Hipster belt like this one? After all the gadget holsters I've seen in the past year, I can honestly say that this one is the least freakish. Featured on Chip Chick, this red nylon gadget belt can be used to hold your mp3 player, cell phone or camera in three storage pockets. Pockets can be moved and removed if you only need one or two. The Hipster is priced at $30 and comes in black or white as well if you aren't feeling the red. What are your thoughts? Stylin' or way too geeky?

This is the most ironic sport of Olympic proportion since curling in the 1924 winter games. Watch four hipsters put their superiority to the test as they duke it out in the most nonchalant way possible for a title they couldn't care less about. They'll race to cash a check from the 'rents, go ironic t-shirt shopping, master a MySpace photo sesh, and other such strenuous activities. It's a brutal battle to the finish, and someone just might almost pretend to do it.

For the good number of you that dig the hipster look, I have a book you'll definitely be inspired by. Street: The Nylon Book of Global Style, $17, features 256 pages of hipster fashion from around the world.

See gals and guys in choppy bangs, layered duds, Ray Bans, skinny jeans, Chucks and the like in the streets of Paris, Tokyo, London, Copenhagen, Berlin, New York and Melbourne. If you feel like biting a look from the book, at least you know you won't run into the same hipster wearing it in, say, Tokyo.

Up Your Coolness Factor With Hipster Gadgets

Whether you define yourself as a hipster or not, one thing is for sure: those cool cats know their beer, indie bands, pop culture, and tech. In fact, I don't know a hipster who isn't slinging a solid level of geek knowledge and understanding of the hipness of certain oddball whatchamacallits.

New devices hit electronic shelves and the Internet daily - some are instantly welcomed with long lines while others are largely ignored. A select few naturally gain geek cred for their coolness. These are the Polaroid keepsakes, Japanese goodies, and mini turntables we eventually see celebrated at the MoMA store, Urban Outfitters, and the Apple store. (Have you ever been to the Apple store on Friday at 6 p.m.? Hipster central.) Take a gander at some of the current classics, and stock up to up your coolness meter.

Hipsters: Maybe Not So Good at Irony After All?

Some controversy's been a-boilin' up in a hipster part of town in San Francisco. The dilemma: Should the neighborhood allow American Apparel to open up a store in a neighborhood with no chain stores and risk starting a trend, or should they keep it real with locally owned funky shops? I thought it was already ironic that many people on the vehemently anti-American Apparel side admitted to wearing American Apparel clothes as they protested - and then I saw this picture. Of hipsters. With a sign. That says, "No more hipster scum." Ha! I thought you were supposed to be good at irony as a hipster. Maybe they're so good I'm missing something.
