Fridays just keep getting better: in addition to taking advantage of some free Mars chocolate, tomorrow is National Doughnut Day - which mean you can enjoy free doughnuts courtesy of both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts. There's no purchase required at Krispy Kreme, where all you have to do is saunter over to your participating local store to score a free pastry. From there, you can cross town to hit up Dunkin' Donuts, where you get a gratis doughnut of your choice with the purchase of any beverage.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge

On Saturday, Feb. 8, over 5,000 runners participated in an unusual charity race that raised about $35,000 for the North Carolina Children's Hospital by taking the Krispy Kreme Challenge. The race begins with a two-mile run to the Krispy Kreme shop, an unusual spot for a race rest station. There the runners need to down a dozen glazed doughnuts, before running two miles back to the starting line. Consider it an out-and-back run with a gluttonous rest stop. The goal is to complete the race within an hour and not to toss your doughnuts in the process.

This reminds me of that guy who's only eating bacon for the entire month of February, but at least these people are getting some exercise. Are you curious to know how many calories are in one dozen Krispy Kreme donuts? Then read more.

Check out the nutritional info for a dozen glazed doughnuts. Can you believe that - 2,400 calories! Well they're running it off, so it's OK, right? Let's say the average person completes the race in one hour. If they're running 50 minutes (25 minutes to the doughnut shop, 10 minutes to scarf down the doughnuts, and another 25 minutes back to the starting line), they'll burn about 788 calories. That means 1,612 calories are left over, although I'm sure half the people can't finish all the doughnuts, or they end up getting sick, so the calories don't stay in their bodies. Oh well. It's all in good fun and it is for charity, but tell me, would you ever sign up for the Krispy Kreme Challenge?

Enjoy Free Krispy Kreme Tomorrow

To honor the Presidential inauguration, tomorrow Krispy Kreme doughnuts is giving away free doughnuts. In the promotion every customer will receive a free doughnut of his or her choice. Krispy Kreme's executive chef, Ron Rupocinski, explains that "Krispy Kreme is taking the inaugural festivities nationwide. We're inviting our fans in cities across the country, including Washington, D.C., to commemorate this historic day with a favorite American treat." No purchase is necessary for the free doughnut. Be sure to find out if your local Krispy Kreme is participating.

Vote Tomorrow, Score Free Food

Tomorrow, I'll be finding several ways to celebrate being an American. Obviously, I'm hitting up PartySugar and LibertySugar's election-night bash, but beforehand I'll cash in on some free food.

Present your "I Voted" sticker at Krispy Kreme and receive a sprinkle-studded, star-shaped doughnut at no cost. For a nice breakfast pairing, head to Starbucks, tell them you voted, and you'll get a free 12-ounce cup of coffee. And for dessert, go to any Ben & Jerry's between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to score a free scoop of ice cream.

Despite the fact that some are calling the promotions illegal, I think these freebies are a wonderful way to promote the vote. Plus, what better way to stay peeled to the results than with a delicious bargain?

Krispy Kreme's New Plan: Smaller Stores and Soft-Serve

After three years of floundering sales, Krispy Kreme has unveiled a new business plan. The doughnut chain famous for its hot-off-the-line, melt-in-your-mouth glazed doughnuts will roll out its own brand of soft-serve ice cream, Kool Kreme. The company also plans to open smaller-sized stores and expand its overseas market share.

Later this year the Winston-Salem, NC-based company plans to open smaller, less costly stores. Shops continue to open, with new franchises outside the United States, in Puerto Rico and Australia.

Kool Kreme has already been tested in markets such as such as Tacoma, WA, and will feature flavors such as Very Vanilla and Deep Chocolate, along with a toppings bar. Krispy Kreme is clearly trying to capitalize on the growing trend of frozen yogurt stores such as Pinkberry and Tasti-D-Lite, but I can't help but think that this move comes a year or two too late, as big cities have already become oversaturated with frozen dessert options. Krispy Kreme Lightens Up . . . Sort Of

Here's one for the "Do we really need these?" books. The folks at Krispy Kreme have decided to offer a limited edition Lightly Glazed doughnut. From now until March 23, you can get a doughnut that is "lightly" drizzled with their signature Original Glaze. I haven't found any nutritional info on these doughnuts, but something tells me that given the amount of glaze, it can't be that much better for you. What do you guys think? Do we need a lightly glazed doughnut? Will you be headed out to try one?

If you loved the snowman shaped doughnuts that Krispy Kreme came up with this past holiday season, then you might be interested in what they've come up with for Valentine's Day: heart-shaped doughnuts! The lovely doughnuts are topped with white icing and pink, red and white sprinkles and are part of their "Share the Love" program. The program also features twelve Valentine's cards for all customers who purchase two dozen doughnuts between now and February 14.
