America is moving one more step closer to awareness of where its food comes from.
The US Department of Agriculture has mandated that all produce as well as meat, fish, and poultry sold in US retail stores will be required to have country of origin labels (COOL) beginning next Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued violations to a number of food companies — among them, Nestlé, POM, Gorton's, and Diamond Foods — demanding they make changes to their product labels. The government agency is cracking down on health assertions, issuing letters to 17 companies for 22 products, alleging they violate the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The labels on food today were standardized to make it easier for us to figure out what exactly we are putting into our bodies. The fact is, reading the labels is still downright confusing so let FIT make you label-able.
Free Range, or Free Roaming is a term we see a lot when buying eggs and poultry.

The Certified Humane Raised & Handled label certifies that animals raised for dairy, lamb, poultry and beef products are treated in a humane manner. This includes that the animals have access to clean and sufficient food and water as well as a safe and healthy environment from birth through to their last day. This term is used on beef, chicken, lamb, pork, turkey and eggs.

Fragrance Free is a term we see a lot on personal hygiene products but is it just good marketing?
Doesn't it seem like everything has a smell, even things that are Fragrance Free? A little confused, yeah me too.

I like eating seasonally and locally, but I am a realist too. I know much of the food we all eat comes from outside the US. Remember the tomato and hot pepper salmonella scare?

Do you know where your avocado is from? That question is easier to answer now as the new food labeling law goes into effect this week. The so-called COOL law (country of origin label) requires producers of fresh meats, many fruits and vegetables, and assorted other products to state clearly on packages where the food originates.
