Would You Eat This Live Octopus?

The other day I came across a very disturbing video. In the video, one of my favorite America's Next Top Model contestants - Elyse Sewell from Cycle 1 - eats live octopus tentacles. She slurps the squirming tentacles down as if they were nothing and she does it while sexily eyeing the camera. Tyra would be so proud, Elyse looks like a model while eating live seafood!

I thought I could eat anything but watching the octopus move as she swallowed it made me feel kind of sick. Still, I pride myself on being adventurous and would try my hardest to stomach this octopus. How about you? Would you eat live octopus?

The Scoop: Octopus Beak Inspires Medical Community

If you can believe it, there just might be a connection between an Octopus's beak and better artificial limbs for humans! I've noticed an upswing in sea life inspiring new inventions recently, and this one is no exception. If you think of how seemingly uncomfortable artificial limbs are now – hard all the way through causing abrasions on amputated limbs – then the octopus may be able to help with a solution to the problem.

The trick to an octopus munching on huge, bone-filled fishies is the tough-as-nails beak. But how the heck can it have a beak with no bones, and keep from hurting itself? That's the question that researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara think they have figured out: The octopus beak gradates from super hard to squishy soft as it meets other tissue. So, if you think of an X-acto knife sticking out of a bowl of Jello, only the knife gets softer the closer it gets to the bottom of the bowl, then you'll sort of get the idea. If artificial limbs had softer consistencies where they connected to limbs and were bone tough at the tips to withstand damage then it would help make amputees' lives more comfortable. Who knew that sea creatures could be so helpful to us land dwellers!?

Weird Furniture: Octopus Chair

The Octopus Chair (price unlisted), fashioned from pairs of recycled jeans and polystyrene balls, is a multi-shape beanbag and a cross "between a chair and a lounge sculpture," allowing you "to adapt your seating to your interior." In some cases of weird furniture, I am willing to suspend my inclination towards normalcy in favor of something that is "weird" yet still cool and "artsy." But dear Mr. Octopus, I do not like you, find you cool or artsy, or care that you can transform into multi-shapes. You simply aren't good-looking enough to pass my test with swimming colors or to ever sea my living room. I hope this news doesn't break your third heart.

Hundreds of New Species Found Off Tasmanian Coast

I think this guy looks like he belongs on a Christmas tree, but this sea crab is just one of the hundreds of new sea creatures discovered off the coast of Tasmania. From crabs to starfish to octopus, these new species were recorded in two separate mile-deep voyages in 2006 and 2007.

Not only did voyagers find new species of animals under the sea, they also discovered miles of coral that is thought to be about 2,000 years old, providing life and food to many creatures. Lead scientist Nic Bax, a marine biologist with Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization talks about the discovery in a recent interview saying,"We know very little about the deep sea. Finding out how much live coral is down there, and how large those communities are, is very exciting."

This picture made my jaw drop, and I live in body modification central: San Francisco. Some dude in Brazil got suction cups implanted under the skin of his arms so that they look like the tentacles of an octopus. Why? I am still scratching my own head, but maybe. . .to keep from slipping in the shower? Cuz that happens to me all the time.

Scarlett Johansson Lands 3 More Roles and She's Not That Into You

Scarlett Johansson has been super busy lately, readying herself for the premiere of one movie next Friday (The Nanny Diaries), working on Woody Allen's latest project and scoring herself three more roles.

One of these is in the oft-reported-on film adaptation of He's Just Not That Into You. In it she joins the all-star cast (now with more Aniston!) as "a pilates instructor/aspiring singer who has an affair with a married man and hopes that he will leave his wife for her."

Next after that project Johansson will try her hand at a comic-book movie, playing a dangerous woman named Silken Floss in Will Eisner's The Spirit, directed by Frank Miller. Apparently, "Floss is a sexy and intelligent secretary with a vindictive instinct that makes her the perfect accomplice to the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), an evil mastermind."

And finally, she will join the cast of Mary Queen of Scots in the title role. Hollywood Reporter describes the project as a "period indie, a love story based on the early life of the legendary queen (Johansson) that focuses on her relationship with the Earl of Bothwell and her rivalry with her half-brother James." John Curran (We Don't Live Here Anymore, The Painted Veil) is set to direct.

If I've learned anything about the film world today it is that filmmakers love the ScarJo.
