A couple of days ago California passed a law that requires chain restaurants to post nutrition facts. I think this is a great idea, but honestly I rarely check out nutrition information because I avoid processed and fast foods. However, I was wondering about you?

Truth be told, I can be a little obsessive about reading nutrition labels while shopping. If you're a label reader too, you'll be happy to know that new nutrition labels will be added to products, so you can compare different food choices easily and (hopefully) opt for healthier alternative.
Called the Overall Nutritional Quality Index (ONQI), the new system basically rates food and assigns numbers from 1 to 100.

Thanksgiving is an awesome time, so don't think I'm being a Debbie Downer here. Sitting down to that enormous dinner on Thursday night just got me thinking about family meals and how hard it is to know what you're eating. Who knows how many calories are in a slice of grandma's famous apple pie, or how much saturated fat is in the scoop of ice cream on top?

Reading nutritional labels can be tough, so it's nice to review the basics every once in a while. I found this little rundown of label basics from WebMD really helpful and simple, so I wanted to share.

New reports are saying that the Treasury Department is considering a new rule that would require companies to put alcoholic content, serving sizes and nutritional information on all alcoholic drink packaging (from beer cans to wine bottles).
As of now, labels on all liquor and on wine with more than 14 percent alcohol by volume must disclose at least the alcohol content, but this is not required for beer (except in some states). However, if a brewer wants its beer to be labeled as a "light" beer, the label must show its caloric content and the percent of alcohol per volume.

Me, I read a label pretty thoroughly and consistently. I like to know what I am putting into my body, good or bad. However, I always find it interesting that my husband will eat just about anything that sounds good to him without so much as glancing at the label — reading the label is not something that he even thinks about (even while being married to FitSugar).

If you've been reading FitSugar, then you know by know that I am an avid serving size watcher. What do I mean by this? Well I always check the nutritional label on foods, and the first thing I look at is the serving size.

I'm typically wary of fitness drinks with gold packaging; they remind me of the weird muscle-building brands I see at the gym. But when I read the label on Forze GPS shakes and bars, I was intrigued.
This line of snacks, including chocolate and vanilla shakes and four flavors of energy bar, is described as a "weight management tool designed specifically for athletes."

Take a peek into my kitchen cabinet for a healthy eating tip. If you can't tell from the picture those are jars with chalkboard labels. I've been using them for almost a year now and for two good reasons: health and money.

When the concept behind the "Smart Choice" food labels was introduced, it sounded like a good idea. The goal was to provide easy to digest nutritional information on the front of food packages and the products bearing the label were to meet health guidelines — low calorie count, low in sugar. But when the green check mark made its debut this August, it seemed rather fishy that the cereal Fruit Loops, which lists sugar as its first ingredient, could score the "Smart Choice" badge of approval.
