Fast & Easy Dinner: Seared Salmon With Oranges and Fennel

Have dinner on the table in minutes with this flavorful salmon dish. Select thin, six-ounce salmon fillets that are firm, but delicate. Once seared, the salmon takes on a buttery, melt-in-your mouth texture.

The fragrant sauce combines citrus juice with crisp fennel and salty olives. For a hearty meal, serve the salmon and vegetables atop couscous.

To look at the delicious recipe,

Come Party With Me: Housewarming Party — Menu

A housewarming party is similar to an open house in that guests will stop by at random times. Instead of slaving over the stove, serve a simple menu of Spanish style tapas that are delicious warm, cold, or at room temperature. Start by putting together a large antipasto platter with your favorite cheese, crackers, marinated vegetables, and charcuterie. Supplement this with a few homemade nibbles. Warm rosemary olives, stuffed mushrooms, and eggplant mozzarella roll-ups are scrumptious and filling. To learn how to make these tasty appetizers,

Not Your Regular Nachos: Mediterranean Nachos

Yesterday before heading to the Nordstrom Fall Preview Fashion Show, I whipped up a quick batch of my signature nachos for FabSugar and I to enjoy. With no time to run to the store, I used ingredients leftover from last week's Greek nachos to make a vegetarian, Mediterranean-inspired appetizer. The pita chips were crisped in the oven before being topped with a Spanish sheep's milk cheese. Once the cheese melted, I garnished them with an easy salsa of grilled cherry tomatoes, green pepper, and kalamata olives. The final result was an incredibly satisfying snack. To learn how I made these,

Fast & Easy Dinner: Mediterranean Grain Salad

Like couscous, quinoa takes on the flavors of its surrounding ingredients. In this recipe, the quinoa is tossed with crunchy peppers, cool cucumbers, and salty olives. Although cheese is not one of the components, crumbled feta or goat cheese would be delicious stirred in with the vegetables. To experiment with quinoa tonight,

Grown up ingredients — capers, garlic, and black olives — are stirred into the mayonnaise based dressing.

Served in avocado halves, this salad is rewarding, sophisticated, and scrumptious. Look at the recipe when you

Fast & Easy Dinner: Pasta with Artichokes, Olives, and Tomatoes

This super quick and healthy pasta incorporates many of my favorite Summer flavors: fresh, fragrant basil, burst in your mouth grape tomatoes, and salty black olives. The natural simplicity of the sauce — the veggies and herbs are barely cooked — pairs perfectly with whole wheat spaghetti.

If you prefer not to cook with wine, use a low sodium chicken broth instead. To make this delicious, vegetarian meal tonight,

Smoky Side: Wheat Berry-Smoked Gouda Salad

I never think to cook with wheat berries, but every time I have them I'm won over by their flavor and texture. It's an interesting grain that works well as a side dish to almost any meal. This recipe for a wheat berry, smoked gouda salad is packed with olives, walnuts, and parsley.

If you're looking for a new side dish to add to your repertoire, then give this one a try. Just be warned, it takes a bit of prep as the berries need to be soaked overnight and the olives need twenty four hours to marinate. To get the recipe, please

Killer App: Endive Boats

The other night I got home from work and was starving. Unfortunately we had late dinner plans that evening, so I couldn't chow down too heavily. We also had limited supplies in our cabinets; there was no bread, crackers, or fruit to snack on. Oddly there were several heads of fresh endives and I figured that was a good place to start.

Endive is great in that you can trim the bottoms off and use the leaves in lieu of crackers. Sometimes I just dollop a mixture of blue cheese and candied walnuts on the ends, and other times I use a tapenade or a hummus. This time I ended up <strike>cleaning out my pantry</strike> blending canned tuna, hummus — it was a nice replacement for mayonnaise — sundried tomato/olive tapenade, and chopped cherry tomatoes into a creamy mixture. I then placed a small spoonful on each end. It ended up being the perfect snack and I was able to save the rest of the mixture — which I put on top of a bed of leafy greens — for lunch the next day.

If you've never had endive, I suggest you give it a try. The outer leaves tend to be more bitter than the inner ones, which are creamy and mild. Just think of them as carb-free savory crackers, and top them with whatever you feel like! They're a great personal snack and make for an elegant appetizer. Most people are always thrilled by them, so give it a go and let us know what you make!

However, I've recently learned that when prepared correctly it can be wonderfully delicious. In this seasonal side, the sometimes overbearing chard melds with tangy green olives, plump currants, and creamy goat cheese in order to create a very refined dish. Sound delicious?
Fast & Easy Dinner: Broiled Salmon with Olive Tomato Vinaigrette

However, it's a wonderful way to cook fish. Fleshy salmon fillets require little time under the broiler before they are flaky and succulent. Topped with a chunky, no-cook sauce, this salmon is simple and delicious. Be careful when broiling and pay attention to the fish, as burning can occur easily. To make this broiled salmon tonight, you'll need the recipe so

Would You Eat This Sandwich? I Did!

The overwhelming response was that of disgust. A measly eleven percent would eat the Max Special. Many people said no thanks, others would only eat the sandwich if starving. Aversions to olives and mayonnaise were strong. There was so much talk about this sandwich that I decided to make it for lunch. Yes, you read that I ate a peanut butter, olive and mayo sandwich. To find out how it tasted — neither fabulous nor disgusting — and see the Sugar Headquarters reactions to the sandwich in a video,

While watching an episode of Diary of a Foodie on the new Gourmet website, I came across a very interesting sandwich.

The magazine's editor in chief, Ruth Reichl, was making The Max Special, a sandwich with peanut butter, mayonnaise, and pimento-stuffed olives. At first I thought, "gross!" Then I realized if Ms. Reichl is eating this sandwich, it must be pretty darn delicious. I plan on making one to see how it tastes.

What do you think? Would you eat this peanut butter, mayonnaise, and pimento-stuffed olive sandwich?

Fun Halloween Snack: Monster Eyes

No, these monster eyes are not cookies, they are delicious little savory bites of cheese and sausage! The secret to these super fast and simple to make appetizers is Bisquick. They make a great afternoon snack or a wonderful hors d'oeurve for a ghoulish party. I'll be pairing mine with an icy cold vodka martini for happy hour on Halloween. The recipe is pretty basic so feel free to jazz it up to suite your tastebuds. Take a peek at how they are made when you,

Definition: Tapenade

Tapenade
A thick paste-like condiment with origins in France's Provence region. The classic paste is usually made from olives, capers, anchovies, olive oil, lemon juice, and seasonings. However, these days you can find many other varieties, including garlic, sun-dried tomato, or artichoke. Excellent when paired with crisp toast, fish, or meat.

Nudo Is Neato! Adopt an Olive Tree of Your Own!

There's a little olive tree in my mom's backyard; the harvest isn't huge, but it allows her to create her own style of pickled olives and oils. If her olive harvest has you feeling jealous, then listen up and adopt your own olive tree. For £65 (~$130), the Nudo olive grove in Le Marche, Italy, lets folks "adopt" a tree for a year. You can let them assign any tree to you, or you can choose a specific part of the grove. Once the tree is yours, you will reap the benefits twice a year. The spring package contains a minimum of 1.5 liters of extra virgin olive oil, and the autumn package contains lemon infused extra virgin olive oil, and three different olive oil soaps scented with mint, rosemary, lemon and lavender. However, if you think that might be too much olive oil for you to handle, you can always purchase their olive oil directly.
