Which Will Win? Red Vines or Twizzlers?

In addition to being grilled cheese day, this Sunday is also National Red Licorice Day. To help us celebrate, the folks at Red Vines recently sent us a care package of various flavors. The Sugar HQ is actually full of die-hard Twizzler fans, so I decided to see what they thought of my fave Red Vines. I took the three Red Vine flavors - pink strawberry, red cherry and original - and strawberry Twizzlers and put them into unmarked bowls.

I then asked folks to come taste them, and rank them from fave to least fave. With 21 taste testers, the results were more or less split down the middle. However there were a few surprises with the Red Vines strawberry option. To see what happened in our oh-so-scientific taste-test, read more.

To begin, the votes were broken down as follows:

9 for original Red Vines
7 for strawberry Twizzlers
4 for red cherry Red Vines
2 for pink strawberry Red Vines

While this wasn't that interesting - nearly split down the middle like I expected - the surprising part was in the comments. Overall, we decided that Twizzlers have a plastic texture, while Red Vines have a rubbery texture. We also learned that if you were a Red Vines fan, then you ranked Twizzlers last, and vice versa. It was the difference in texture that seemed to be what people used as a ranker. Those who grew up with Twizzlers thought it tasted "more authentic" while Red Vines people thought their choice was the real deal.

The intriguing part came from the two die-hard Twizzler fans who ranked strawberry Red Vines as favorite. They thought the flavor was great - I thought the two were really close in flavor - and wondered how they could swap their loyalty so easily.

To follow up on this, I did a blind-taste test with a few other folks. They agreed that the flavor of the two were quite similar. Yet I was surprised that it received such few votes. Turns out it was the bright pink Barbie color that really threw everyone off. Folks told me they thought it should taste like Starburst, or something "tropical" and a few folks even swore it had to be pink lemonade.

In the end, it really comes down to texture, flavor and what you grew up with. What do you think? Have you ever forced yourself to do a licorice taste test? Do you think your results would change?

Red Vines or Twizzlers?

Today I was meeting a friend for lunch when I realized I didn't have any cash. So I popped into the nearby drugstore to use my ATM card for some cash back. When I usually do this, I end up with a pack of gum, but today something made me grab a pack of Red Vines instead.

I brought them back to the office where we ended up debating the flavor and texture of a Red Vine (thicker, slightly cherry flavored and waxy, like chewy licorice) versus a Twizzler (normally strawberry or cherry flavored and plasticky, like little vinyl shoelaces all twisted together). Now I love almost all candy, so I can appreciate both, however, if I have my choice, it's Red Vines all the way. Not only do I prefer the flavor and texture, but you can use it as a straw and besides, we all know that it's Mr. Pibb + Red Vines = Crazy Delicious not Mr. Pibb + Twizzlers...

Happy Hour: XYZin 100-Year-Old Vine Zinfandel 2006

Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the Zinfandel Advocates and Producers wine tasting. One of the best wines I tasted was this bottle of old vine Zin. An old vine Zinfandel comes from grapes grown on vines that were planted in California many years ago. While XYZin has delightful offerings from 10- and 50-year-old vines, I found the pour from the 100-year vines to be the most robust, flavorful, and complex. It's a smooth, but serious wine with a full body, jammy taste, and fruity aroma. Unlike some bold Zins, XYZin's is neither too spicy or tannic. Although we enjoyed this wine alone, it longs for food and would pair well with everything from creamy cheese to thick-cut steak. At $45, it's not the cheapest bottle of wine, but it's worth the splurge and would be perfect for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner.

Kasabian and Muse both won two gongs at last night's NME Awards, with Matt Bellamy taking the hottest man award as well as his bands awards for best british band and best website. JLS weren't so lucky, and weren't there to pick up their worst band award, and NME readers' opinions were split on Lady GaGa as she won both the best and worst dressed awards. Tell FabUK who you think was the best dressed of the ladies at the ceremony last night!

The Mighty Boosh were there to pick up their best dvd award, and La Roux took home the best dancefloor filler award. Agyness Deyn showed up with her buddy Henry Holland, Kaya Scodelario attended with her man Elliott Tittensor, while Jamie Campbell Bower and Bonnie Wright chatted to photographers on their way down the red carpet. Slash, Fearne Cotton, Courtney Love, The Specials, Lily Allen and Paul Weller were also among the guests!

Happy Hour: Milliaire Old Vine 2003 Carignane

Isn't it funny when you learn about something new and then suddenly it's everywhere? That's exactly what happened to me a couple of weeks ago when I tasted this Milliaire Old Vine 2003 Carignane. Immediately I'm noticing it everywhere and I'm asking myself, how did I never notice it before?

I instantly enjoyed the intense flavor of this grape that I now recognize on wine lists. Although this varietal originated in Spain, this California-grown Carignane is robust with simple berry undertones. Made from vines that are 80-years-old, it has a gorgeous ruby color. I can't wait to get my hands on another bottle and suggest you do the same!

Homemade Howl-oween: A Grape Costume Idea!

What a grape, err I mean great, costume idea! It may not be a pet-safe snack, but it's a neat ensemble nonetheless.
Turn your own dog into Grapes on a Vine . . . on a dime! OK, more than $.10 but this costume can easily be had, especially if your pup already has a green coat or sweatshirt.

To create, simply blow up purple balloons (or choose red or green balloons for your favorite flavor) and hot glue them to the coat. Add on some leaves cut from a garland and you've got a fine costume on your hands - just be sure to place the balloons where your pup can't accidentally pop them and put it out of reach when the photo opp's done.

The Teen Choice Awards won't air until tomorrow, but Pop and I were lucky enough to hit the red carpet and press room when the show was taped tonight. 2009 Teen Choice Awards: Arrivals and Winners!

The 2009 Teen Choice Awards took place yesterday in LA, with all the stars of the past year's charts, movies and TV shows turning up to be awarded by teens. The show is yet to air in both the US and UK, but Twilight took home a whole host of awards (check out the winners list under the cut for spoilers) as did Gossip Girl and the Jonas Brothers. Kristen Stewart looked like she was taking tips from Robert Pattinson with her big hair, and wore a seriously cool spiky skirt, while Leighton looked sexy in stripes!

Guests included Zac Efron, Britney Spears, Megan Fox, Black Eyed Peas, Vanessa Hudgens, Hugh Jackman and many more. Miley Cyrus hosted the ceremony - don't forget to check back for some photos from the show itself later on today!
