As youngsters, we are led to believe storks drop newborns off in a bundled white sack. At some point in time, wee ones will find out that Santa Claus isn't real and that mama lied about those long necked birds. There are only two ways to enter this world — through the birth canal or slipping through a surgically split belly.

I'm crazy about Summer for many reasons, a major one being the season's amazing selection of stone fruits and berries. So I was beyond excited when a close friend surprised me with a new cookbook that takes advantage of my love for fruit: Chez Panisse Desserts ($20.70). "I was inspired to create a look between old-school Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Newton-John from her days in Grease, and classic Marilyn," said celebrity makeup artist Napoleon Perdis.

When I was in high school my friends and I got together every year for a party we called 'Friend Christmas'. Instead of having to purchase gifts for all of the girlies in our circle we did a Secret Santa exchange. The sleepover was a highlight of the Christmas holidays, one full of gossip and cookies.

Recently, writer Dan Savage posted about chocolate-covered bacon. The picture comes from Marini's in Santa Cruz, CA, and I happen to think it looks sort of tasty. I also happen to be pretty bummed that it wasn't available when I lived in Santa Cruz.

Events are all over the map this week, especially in New York and California. As usual, there's no shortage of festivals for the oenophile. The other activities, however, really demonstrate our country's appreciation for regional American foods, from shellfish on the Eastern seaboard to kolaches in Texas.
