In an attempt to cut costs and be more eco-chic, many college campuses have gotten rid of cafeteria trays. Instead, students are being forced to carry their meals on plates. The trayless cafeterias are seeing up to a 30 percent decrease in food waste, and with no trays to wash, the use of energy and water is reduced as well.

With the weather warming up, I've turned my attention to alfresco entertaining. Last weekend, I suggested my guests and I grab our cocktails and appetizers and head out to the patio. There was a lot to carry and on my third trip back to the kitchen, I couldn't help but wonder why I don't own a stylish serving tray?

This barbecue tray with veins pokes fun at the juices that flow from grilled red meat. Its dark sense of humor is not for the faint of heart. What do you think of it?

You could opt for a nice bottle of wine, but since that is so obvious, why not get them something a little more unique? There are quite a few things for the dinner party enthusiast, you can surprise them with this clever baguette tray and knife ($38) — it is a bit specialized, but is still a load of fun — or splurge and get them a new set of placemats.

Fall is a wonderful time to enjoy a harvest of delicious fruits. Apples, pears, and cranberries are best consumed this time of year, whether you eat them alone or mix them into a dish. These fruits also look gorgeous when on display or as decor in the kitchen.

Since I'm on the hunt for the perfect lacquer tray to set atop my Nelson Platform Bench (coffee table), I thought I'd share with you my top picks, in case you're in the market too. I was originally hoping for two white-square lacquer trays, but now I'm thinking that a little color couldn't hurt. Here are the ones in the running:
Good: West Elm's Square Trays ($19–$24) are colorful "catch-alls for jewels, watches, pencils, and whatnots."

I always have a bottle of water with me, but especially when I am going to work out. Nothing is more annoying than trying to shove a few ice cubes into the little opening of any bottled water. It never works and I always end up with ice cubes all over my kitchen floor.
