While they're often used interchangeably here in the United States, yams and sweet potatoes are not the same thing. In fact, the two are not even distantly related to one another!
Sweet potatoes originate from South America, and come in two different kinds: a pale-skinned variety, which has a thin yellow skin and a crumbly flesh similar to a baking potato, and a darker-skinned variety, which is often confused with the yam.

Although the lovely Julianne Moore was not planning on going to any shows for Fall 2007 Fashion Week, she did make one exception.
Both the brand and the creative head of the French fashion company Lacoste, Christophe Lemaire, support her charity Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. On February 3rd, decked out in cute Lacoste gear, Julianne made her way to the Bryant Park tents to support the cause which she so strongly believes in.

Healthier, alternative snack chips were a huge trend at last weekend's Fancy Foods Show. With names like Corazonas and Yuka, these chips have South American roots.

Definition
Tuberous sclerosis is a group of two genetic disorders characterized by problems with the skin, brain/nervous system, and kidneys. There is also a predisposition to tumors. The diseases are named after a characteristic abnormal growth in the brain, which takes the shape of a tuber or root.

These red (erythematous) elevated skin lesions (papules) are tumors made-up of fibrous tissue (angiofibroma) and occur with tuberous sclerosis. Tuberous sclerosis affects both the nervous system and the skin (neurocutaneous) and may also produce other skin lesions including shagreen spots, ash-leaf macula, and periungual fibromas (a type of skin tumor).

This area of decreased pigment (hypopigmentation) is referred to as an "ash leaf macule" and is seen with the inherited disorder, tuberous sclerosis. Another finding, "confetti hypopigmentation" is evident as scattered white spots around the ash leaf spot.

Potato poisoning occurs when someone eats the green tubers or new sprouts of the potato plant.

Where Found
The poison is found throughout the plant, but especially in green potatoes and new sprouts. Never eat potatoes that are spoiled or green below the skin.

Julianne Moore believes that children are our future and is doing all she can to ensure that they make it. The Academy Award nominated actress serves as a Save the Children artist ambassador and presented the agency's "The Disaster Decade: Lessons Unlearned for the United States" report recently.
According to the text, only seven out of 50 states meet the minimum preparedness standards for protecting children during disasters, which includes effective systems for family reunification and shelters that separate tots from adults to keep them safe from predators.
