What Would You Make? Apples

We know that apples are in season, and we can even identify one variety from the next, but how do you use apples? They're delicious raw and equally tasty cooked down to butter. The versatile fruit adds crunch to salads and classically fills a pie. But I want to know: If you were given a bushel of fresh-picked apples, what would you make? I'll start off by saying I've been dying to make this apple cake! How about you? Leave your ideas or your favorite recipe below.

We've all been in crazy situations, and I want to know how you handle entertaining fiascoes and bad restaurant behavior. I'll present a situation and you tell me what you would do. Here's today's scenario:

You've just moved into a new neighborhood, and the friendly family next door stops by to say hi. They happen to own a nearby restaurant that you've been curious about and wanting to try. The hang-up? They invite you over, and it turns out their house is disorganized, dirty, and ill kept - which leaves you questioning the restaurant's cleanliness and health standards. As you leave, the family encourages you to come to the restaurant sometime for a meal. What would you do?

Because they're such nice neighbors, I'd go to the restaurant to make nice. I would avoid ordering anything raw (like oysters), instead opting for a small dish and a drink. I'd choose something that's popular on the menu, as the food is more likely to be fresh and routinely prepared. And I'd definitely take a look at the health inspection scorecard on my way out!

What Would You Do?

You're at a small (but popular) restaurant that sells burgers and sausages to go. When you place your order you're told by the abrasive girl at the counter that your wait will be at least 15 minutes.

Ten minutes into your wait, she suddenly cries out to everyone present:

Hey, listen up everybody! The tip jar is right here, and if you could make a generous contribution that would be great . . . dollars only, please!

When this happened to me at a San Francisco restaurant, I was so stunned I wasn't sure what to do. Thankfully, I didn't have to make a decision, because my sweetie, who was waiting with me, wound up putting a dollar or two in the tip jar. If that were to happen to me again, however, I don't think I would tip her. Her salty attitude, combined with her demand for a bills-only tip at a restaurant with no service would not garner a tip from me.

You're the renowned chef and owner of a super popular restaurant in a big city. An important food critic is sitting at a table tonight with his friends. When his order is about to be sent out you realize one of the dishes is completely wrong. What would you do?

Since I would not want to send out an incomplete order to such a significant customer, I would ask the line cooks to remake the entire order. Knowing this takes time, I would quickly throw together an amuse-bouche or appetizer. I would ask my best waiter to send it out to the table and tell them the food was compliments of the chef. The critic would never know there was a crisis in the kitchen.

You've heard all about Starbucks attempts to improve the quality of their coffee and service so you decide to stop in and treat yourself to a Frappuccino. The drink is delicious and rewarding until you get about half way through when suddenly you realize nothing but giant chunks of ice are left! What would you do?

I would return to the Starbucks where I purchased the drink and ask them - politely - to remake it, taking care to thoroughly blend it. I would thank them nicely. Later while at my computer, I would file a complaint post on My Starbucks Idea.

What Would You Do?

To get to know your best friend's new boyfriend, you decide to host a dinner party with them and some other couples. You serve the food buffet-style to keep the atmosphere relaxed and promote conversation. When the new guy gets in the buffet line, he takes his plate, walks over to the sink, and starts rinsing it with water. Your friends behind him in line stop and stare. What would you do?

I would walk right up to the new guest and ask him what he's doing. It turns out he was warming his plate - which is a little odd for a dinner party - so I would offer to warm his and any other plate in the oven.

What Would You Do?

You're at an incredibly popular marketplace deli late in the afternoon. The place is neither crowded nor busy. You wait in line, order food, and sit at one of the many empty tables outside. Your food arrives promptly. You grab a fork, take a bite, and are shocked to find out that it's totally and completely cold! What would you do?

I would walk back to the counter where I ordered the food and kindly let them know that it was cold. I would politely request that they heat it up. If they refused to heat it up, I would let them know that I don't want the food and will not be returning anytime soon to the restaurant.

We've all been in crazy situations and I want to know how you handle entertaining fiascoes and bad restaurant behavior. I'll present a situation and you tell me what you would do. Here's this week's scenario: You're hosting an intimate dinner party for 12 of your friends. You've been planning for weeks and no detail is spared. The food is exquisitely prepared and a pitcher of cocktails waits to be poured. The house is immaculately clean and the mood enhanced by tons of glowing candles.

To promote mingling and conversation, you took the time to create a seating arrangement with place cards - separating those couples who are always together - so unacquainted guests can become new friends. Everyone arrives and the party is going fabulously until one of your girlfriends pulls you aside. She says,"I hope you don't mind, I moved some of the names on the table around so I can sit next to my boyfriend." What would you do?

I smiled politely and told my friend that I had spent time putting together the seating chart. I reminded her that it was my party and my house and asked her to kindly respect my rules and feelings. I also explained why I had chosen not to seat her next to her boyfriend. I filled her cocktail and excused myself. I went into the dining room and changed the place cards back to the arrangement I created.

We've all been in crazy situations and I want to know how you handle entertaining blusters and bad restaurant behavior. Much like our What Would You Make feature, I'll present a situation and you tell me what you would do.

Here's the scenario: you're at a new, trendy restaurant. You don't have a reservation but, it's 8:15 and you figure they might be able to squeeze you in. When you arrive at the restaurant there are several open tables. However, the hostess tells you there is a 20-minute wait. You are in no hurry and decide to wait. The 20 minutes go by and there is still an empty table. All of a sudden you realize you've been waiting 50 minutes and the table is still empty. What would you do?

I went to the hostess and told her we had been waiting for almost an hour when she said the wait was only 20 minutes. While, I understand that people with reservations get priority over those without them, I wondered why we stood there for 50 minutes when we could have been seated and eating. Luckily I noticed there was a spot clearing up at the bar. I told her we would like to sit there. The open spot was only for two people and we were three, but it was better than waiting outside in the cold night!

What Would You Do?

Here's the scenario: you're at a neighborhood restaurant for brunch. One of the dishes you order is a salad. To your dismay the salad appears with something not mentioned on the menu: a live slug! When you call the waitress over, she acts as if it's nothing, and says, "Oh its just a little slug." She then sticks her hand in the salad to remove the slug and walks away. What would you do?

I would ask to see the manager immediately and describe the slug in the salad. I would explain how I was appalled by the waitress's blasé attitude toward the slug and demand a large portion of my bill be taken off.
